Emails not being sent [RESOLVED]

Postby modem7 » Wed Apr 11, 2012 5:08 pm

Hey guys,

Just noticed that my logwatch hasn't been sent this morning, and decided to check it out.

Logged into webmin and saw that I have 25 mails pending to be sent.

Next to each is: Deferred: Connection refused by hda.home.com

Was working yesterday, so no idea what the heck is going on.

Sendmail is up and running, tried restarting it, still no go.

As a Linux noob, now totally stumped.

edit: tried doing a flush and got the following:

Forcing the attempted delivery of 1 selected messages ..

WARNING: local host name (AlexServer) is not qualified; see cf/README: WHO AM I?

Running /var/spool/mqueue/q3B07Sim003079 (sequence 1 of 1)
<m*****7@gmail.com>... Connecting to hda.home.com. via relay...
<m*****7@gmail.com>... Deferred: Connection refused by hda.home.com.

(I omitted the email address for security reasons)

Check to see that postfix is running as well. They work together.

Both started, still no go.

/etc/hosts:

#host localhost:

#ps aux|grep sendmail
ps aux|grep sendmail
root 9504 0.0 0.0 96392 2580 ? Ss 17:54 0:00 sendmail: accepting connections
smmsp 9512 0.0 0.0 78044 1932 ? Ss 17:54 0:00 sendmail: Queue runner@01:00:00 for /var/spool/clientmqueue
root 10484 0.0 0.0 103376 792 pts/0 S+ 18:01 0:00 grep --color=auto sendmail

Unsure if these help?

edit:

Just as an FYI, I did "service smartd start" and that sends emails.
(my config for that is /dev/sda -n standby -a -I 194 -W 6,45,55 -R 5 -M daily -M test -m m****7@gmail.com)

Greyhole --fsck -e also sends emails.

How do you have the email set up? Are you using your ISP or Google?

ISP. Could never get google smtp to work (problems with the certificate creation - but that's another problem for another thread).

ISP smtp server over p25, sending to my google account.

Does this help at all?

Not sure what the issue could be. Check log files in /var/log folder.

Only thing I can see that looks weird is:

You might consider redoing the mail setup. That would fix anything that might be broken I would think. Have you rebooted? It indicates the address is already is use which often is corrected with a reboot.

Is there something you did recently on the HDA that might affect the email? Seems odd that it was working, then all of a sudden quit.

Uninstalled + reinstalled postfix + sendmail, redid the setup, and it now seems emails are getting through (emails in the queue aren't, but I deleted those and will see how things go).

Thank you very much for all your help!

Great! Hard to say what was broken, but at least you have it going again. Email is such a complicated thing with a server for some reason.

BTW, we have a mail server application in testing that works well. If you would be interested in testing some time, please let me know.

http://www.amahi.org/apps/amahi-mail-system

Not sure if it will ever make it live, but it has served me well in the past. The key to it's success is ensuring you have a valid host name, not localhost.
