Request help installing Virtualbox according to wiki

Postby ralfb » Fri Dec 17, 2010 11:35 pm

Hello,

I followed method 1 from http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/VirtualBox.

Virtualbox is not working and reports:
root@padme ralf]# VirtualBox
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE) or it failed to

sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.

I did sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup as root and got:

Did you install the dependencies: dkms gcc? Also, if you are using 32-bit, it may be you need to use the PAE kernel devel.

Many thanks for your reply, unfortunately I don't know what below means.
Did you install the dependencies: dkms gcc? Also, if you are using 32-bit, it may be you need to use the PAE kernel devel.
Any chance you could elaborate?

Many thanks

Did you follow the wiki exactly?

yum install -y VirtualBox-3.2 dkms gcc

Also, what are you using 32- or 64-bit VM?

Let me caution you that this is not the best thing for a newbie. It does require some knowledge of Linux. This is not an Amahi supported feature, just something for those who wanna play.

I will try to help you, but it may not be easy here. If you can come by the IRC channel, I might be able to assist better.

Hi, thanks for your response:
Did you follow the wiki exactly?
I believe so for method 1
yum install -y VirtualBox-3.2 dkms gcc
see below:

yum install -y VirtualBox-3.2 dkms gcc
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, presto, refresh-packagekit
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* fedora: mirror.cse.iitk.ac.in
* rpmfusion-free: mirror.cse.iitk.ac.in
* rpmfusion-free-updates: mirror.cse.iitk.ac.in
* rpmfusion-nonfree: mirror.cse.iitk.ac.in
* rpmfusion-nonfree-updates: mirror.cse.iitk.ac.in
* updates: mirror.cse.iitk.ac.in
Setting up Install Process
Package VirtualBox-3.2-3.2.12_68302_fedora12-1.i686 already installed and latest version
Package dkms-2.1.0.1-1.fc12.noarch already installed and latest version
Package gcc-4.4.4-10.fc12.i686 already installed and latest version
Nothing to do

PAE kernel devel
What is the PAE kernel or driver? Where may I find it and how may I install it.

Here is Virtual Box's complaint:

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary
.

Also, what are you using 32- or 64-bit VM?
What is VM? If you mean Virtual Machine, I'm not using that. Using Amahi on Fedora 12, 32 bit.
Let me caution you that this is not the best thing for a newbie. It does require some knowledge of Linux. This is not an Amahi supported feature, just something for those who wanna play.
Thanks, got it.

Any help is much appreciated.

Will a Win7 or win XP Virtual PC be able to access the Amahi network shares?

best,

Ralf

I think he means 'kernel-PAE-devel-2.6.32.26-175.fc12.i686' if you are running a 32 bit OS.

You would install it using "sudo yum install kernel-PAE-devel-2.6.32.26-175.fc12.i686" or some such.

Yes, that is true. You will need to remove the kernel-devel by doing:

yum remove kernel-devel

Then, install the PAE version:

yum install kernel-PAE-devel

If this is a 32-bit system, that should resolve your issues.

Thank you both,

I installed the new Kernel as per code above without removing the other earlier ahead of getting the second message. VirtualBox is launching fine now.

Do I still need to remove a kernel?

Many thanks

If it works, I would not worry about it.

Hi

I used the 2nd option from the Wiki and yet have the same problem. The solutions proferred don't seem to have fixed for me though.

I have "gone over" the install a 2nd time to be doubly sure.

When I executed the command

Code: Select all

rpm --import oracle_vbox.asc
the first time I am sure there was no message
Doing it a second time returns a message "error: oracle_vbox_asc: import failed."

When I run

Code: Select all

uname -r
It says 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE

running

Code: Select all

yum install -y kernel-PAE-devel
says
Package kernel-PAE-devel-2.6.32.26-175.i686 already installed and latest version. Nothing to do.

running

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
gives
WARNING: Deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/.
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules [ OK ]
Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules [ OK ]

I have run VirtualBox previously on Ubuntu but I am still a bit of a Fedora newb so if I have missed anything glaring I apologise for wasting your time .... but apart from it seeming to be related to kernel versions I am at a head scratching loss on this. Your advice would be most welcome.

Thanks
