Hi All,
I am currently running FC10 with Amahi 4.x. This performs the crucial role of central file server for the home, including video and other media. I am about to build a new machine and will put FC 12 and the latest Amahi 5.2 on it and then migrate all my data across. Because my time is limited at the moment I only get short periods to work on tech projects like this so it's likely to be a couple of weeks before it's ready to replace the existing one. I don't want to decommission the current HDA until the new one is ready for prime time. I understand it's not possible to have more than one HDA profile registered on the Amahi.org control panel so how should I best go about this transition? By my understanding I can't install Amahi on the new machine until I've deleted the profile for the current HDA and established a new profile with a new install code. I guess my current HDA isn't going to stop working just because I delete it's profile, right?
Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
Cheers
Richard

You can have more then one profile on amahi.org, just go into your account and "Start building a new HDA!"
only issue might be is that it should be on a different network so the two hda's don't conflict with one another.

rampage is right, but i think it's ok to have them both in the same network, as long as you control their DHCP servers so that you do not have two of them running simultaneously. having two running simltaneously may make clients switch from one hda to the other for DNS, apps, etc. (samba may also become confused!).
you should disable the new one or the old one as soon as it comes up for the first time after install. then later settle on the one you want permanently.

Ok, thank you both for your replies. Sounds like it should be straightforward to commission the hew HDA before decommissioning the old as long as I disable the DHCP side of things on the new one until the old is taken out of service.

you got it. it's unlikely to cause *too* much trouble, but it can make things confusing.
oh, and thanks for being a "repeat customer"! we like that!

Sorry for digging up such an old thread but it's relevant to my future plans for my Amahi setup
I've been using Amahi on a spare pentium 4 for about 2 years. Great product by the way guys. I now want to upgrade to a newer machine with SATA drives and all things shiny for better media streaming and to better deal with all the processes I usually run.
I'm going to do as discussed in the previous replies and disable the DHCP on the new HDA until it's all working and then swap over the DNS control and finally decommission the old server (and also nick a few bits off it) the old one is running Fedora12 and the new one will go on to 14. Should I expect anything unusual in the installation procedure because of this? I'm expecting it will go fine but you never know.
Thanks in advance
Stu
