OK the pings start failing during the "Installing the Amahi platform (this may take a few minutes)" portion of the install-amahi script.

That indicates there is a connectivity issue between you and the Amahi repo. Is there a firewall in your network that could be causing problems?

no firewall at all, just a home router (westell 7500 if it makes a difference)

I'm thinking I might try a Fedora 14 install and see if I get the same problem.

Not sure what the issue could be. Maybe trying F14 is worth a shot.
