What The #%&$, I need Seriuos help
Re: What The #%&$, I need Seriuos help
Well guys, I kinda did as I would do with any win pc, I did start over. From scratch. I added my 1T drive after system was back up and running. Got it partitioned and formatted. Checked my dashboard, I can see the drive in the "storage"/"disks" but I don't have it in the "shares"/"storage" area. I have the option to pool the root drive though. I don't have the 250G (root) drive selected for grayhole and I'm not sure if I should, at least it's not recommended I've read. I still had problems with running headless. Seems now after a few more hours of issues, instead of logging in from my laptop using hda:1 as before, now it's hda:2. Don't know what happen there, probably my fat fingering a sys file or installing it twice but I'm posting now from laptop logged on to HDA, go figure. Any way, next. Getting win7 to see that big old drive. Oh, by the way, I formatted it using ext4, wouldn't surprise me if I was supposed to use NTFS. Guess I'll see. Ok, back to getting W7 to see the drive. I've tried mapping the drive. Problem is, I have no idea what to type to actually find it. I've tried W7's backup program but the only locations are my sd slot or dvd drive. There was a suggestion to use a third party backup program, I'm not dismissing that idea yet but I would like to try and get w7 to work my way first. I never did say anything about my hda's hardware: It's a P4 2.4 cpu, P4P800 SE MB, 2G ram. Just old stuff I had. I know it's way over powered but the one I built about a year ago has since been recycled to other machines. If I (we) can get this figured out, I might hunt up those old parts and build another that uses less power. For now though, I really would like to get this one going so I know what to do next time. Heck, I still have big drives to install.

I don't believe the Windows 7 Premium Backup and Restore allows use of network drives. I have tried on my machines with no success. It only shows hard drives as a possible backup location.
I did some searching and found this in the Windows Help file:
"You can only save your backups on a network location on Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, and Windows 7 Enterprise."
So if you have one of those versions, you should be able to do it. Otherwise, it has to be a 3rd party backup program.

All 3 PC OS's are Home, so, looks like 3rd party for me. Thanks for the info.

Keep an eye open for when Crashplan comes out of beta - I think you will be pleasantly surprised by it.

Re: What The #%&$, I need Serious help
Can someone tell me how to edit the /etc/fstab file from boot. The history for this request? I installed one of my 1T HD's and followed wiki's directions for "adding a second hard drive". Made it through to opting to use the drive in grayhole seeing how there isn't anything on any of my shares (still working on that). I typed "hda-diskmount", got my identifier number for the drive and placed it in "/etc/fstab"'s last line. All's good? No. I tried to mount the drive "mount-a", can't find the drive. So, I thought, well I'll just reboot. And now it wont boot. It hangs on this error: fsck.ext4: Unable to resolve 'UUID...and the big long number that I wrote down and checked five times before editing the fstab file. I had the option to enter my password, which I did, and I could call up the file but it was read only. So. There it is. Can I fix this file or do I reinstall for the 4th time in 2 weeks? Oh, I did unplug the drive as well but same result.

Go download your choice of a Live CD, boot to it and edit your existing fstab. Can someone tell me how to edit the /etc/fstab file from boot. The history for this request? Thanks, I'll give it a try. I should have thought of that one.
Re: What The #%&$, I need Seriuos help
After I get this fixed, my next question is; how can I view the UUID # assigned to my drive without using the "hda-diskmount" command? Every time I type that command, the results keep changing, ex: bla,bla,bla/drives/drive1, then /drive2, then /drive3; I had this all the up to drive 8. I ended up just starting over with a clean install. I have to check that UUID # and make sure I have it right because I can't seem to get it recognized in my dashboard.
Re: What The #%&$, I need Seriuos help
You can use ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid. Diskmount is just going to keep adding to existing mount points, so the number keeps going up. You can delete all the empty mount points hda-diskmount has created and re-run hda-diskmount as well, just don't delete any mount points for mounted drives. After I get this fixed, my next question is; how can I view the UUID # assigned to my drive without using the "hda-diskmount" command? Re: What The #%&$, I need Serious help
Just a quick update on my progress so far. Thanks to all of you for your help. I did get my hard drive issues ironed out, I've only got the 1 1T HD in the machine so far. Grayhole is set up to use that extra space. My HDA can be ran from my laptop. My next challenge is to be able to access the HDA from work. I haven't really looked to deep into this yet, Iv'e tried a few times to connect from work but the logon times out. I need to spend some more time in the wiki's.
