i know some things about apache, but i cannot get it to work
Too bad, you cannot choose between use dns/dhcp and do not use dns/dhcp
i am back to my clearos server
Amahi as a "dumb" server
Re: Amahi as a "dumb" server
The trick to using a separate dns is to add an alias (technical term is CNAME) record pointing to the server ip for each application you add. DNS supports this but you have to now what you are doing. If you do not, this may not be the server you need.
I had my own dns & dhcp before Amahi, but in the end I found it easier to move them to Amahi. (and I know what I'm doing)

I know what I am doing and use Webmin for my DNS maint on my DNS server. The trick to using a separate dns is to add an alias (technical term is CNAME) record pointing to the server ip for each application you add. For my Samba server, I run full Amahi services (on that subnet). For my standalone server, I added the needed DNS CNAME records to my Internal view. Only the webmail is on the external view.
Re: Amahi as a "dumb" server
Glad that is working for you. What I don't want to do is manage a new DNS record for every app I add. So in the end, for me, it was simpler to just let Amahi do it. And that is what I want - simplerI know what I am doing and use Webmin for my DNS maint on my DNS server.

Re: Amahi as a "dumb" server
There is really NOTHING simple about DNS. Amahi does a GOOD job of hiding a lot of the DNS complexity IF it is your DNS server. For all the magic of Dynamic DNS (and I was at the IETF meetings where we worked it out), or all the pieces of needed for a URL to actually work, there is a lot there. So AMAHI too the approach to make it work within your home network PROVIDED...Glad that is working for you. What I don't want to do is manage a new DNS record for every app I add.
