VNC on startup

Postby mfb236 » Sun Jun 13, 2010 9:07 am

Hello everyone,

I am a complete newbie to Linux and Amahi, but I do a lot of windows network administration, so I'm not slouch at computers. I am however having an issue with VNC.

I just recently set up Amahi in my home, and so far have configured it to my liking. It is currently acting as the DHCP server in my house as well as sharing all of media successfully, however, I really want it to run headless where my old windows server did. The problem I'm having it that I cannot get VNC to boot on startup.

I followed the instructions in the wiki, and if I log in, I can start vnc server and use another computer to log in, but when I re-boot the system, if I want to start vnc server I have to do it manually. This is a pain, since I have to bring a monitor to the server's location in order to get it started. I ran chkconfig vncserver on as root user, but my client computers cannot establish a connection.

When I reach the log in screen to fedora, if I look at the boot log, next to starting VNC, it says:

Starting VNC : No Displays Configured [Failed]

Am I overlooking something? Or is there something that I need to change? Like I said, I'm really new to this linux thing, and after roaming google searches for hours, I'm coming here to see if I'm just simply doing something wrong.

You can use ssh (i.e. PuTTY or Tunnelier on Windows) to log into your hda and start X and the VNC server from a client without hauling the monitor.

If you follow the VNC page all the way through however, you can find instructions on how to make it automatically log in so the VNC starts every time. ;)

Thanks, I don't really know how I missed that section. I'm going to try following the steps later and see if I can get that to work. It seems though everytime I change something, something else breaks.

I have done this and it automatically loads and if I look at services VNC service is running but I can't connect from my other computer. If I then start a terminal and type vncserver as root I can then login from my other computer. How can I get it to start automatically?

Thanks,

Quazeye,

I too am having the same problem, along with several others, but I do have an answer for your problem. There is a bug in F12 that requires a monitor to be attached in order for your desktop to start. One of the fixes I've seen requires you to add nomodeset to the end of the /boot/grub/menu.lst kernel string - didn't work for me. :(

Once I get my other woes worked out, I'm just going to leave a vga-dvi plug attached to the vga port; some postings I found through Google state the desktop will boot as long as there is something plugged into the vga port (i.e. a monitor) even if it's unplugged from the electricity. Seems kind of dumb, but if it works I won't complain.

Try Googling fedora 12 won't boot without monitor.

Take care.
Barry

Thanks Barry,

I do have a monitor hooked up but still I have to go to the computer and type vncserver it terminal before I can login from another computer. Not sure how to get this to happen automatically.
