Apps stopped working from network computers

Postby peterrajh » Sat Jan 02, 2010 1:28 am

Here is my problem:

After installing amahi server, i have also installed a few apps, to try... I your reach those apps by typing "hda" in url of a browser, and then clicking on a app on the first page of the amahi dashboard.

But now, after a few days i can not access apps any more. I can still bring up the amahi dashboard (my typing "hda" in url), but when I click on a app it bring out "the page cant be found"...

I can stil access apps from locally on the machine with amahi installed on it...

What could be the problem here? How can i fix this?

hmmm. we have been battling these glitches for a bit now!

can you tell us what client OSs (win xp/vista/7, mac os, linux, ...)?

from the client os, id your app is, say, ampache, can you ping ampache.home.com?
(assuming home.com is your home domain)

you have to make sure it's pinging to your hda IP, not some other (opendns guide IP).

some more update:
(note that i didnt do anything other than tried to ping the apps)
when I call the app by clicking on it in the dashboard or after typing its name in the browser some apps run at once, some display the page could not be found and some display the service temporarly unavailable error, after that all apps works if I just refresh the page (F5)... except for the ajaxterm, that displays the folowing error:
Service Temporarily Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
Apache/2.2.14 (Fedora) Server at ajaxterm.pr.net Port 80
Any Idea what is hapening here? :D

And one more thing webvnc does not work unleas i am loged in on the amahi - what other way of remote access to the server do you recomend? I am going to put the server in other room where noise is not going to be a problem...

wow. hmm. this is puzzling. it's killing me that i cannot reproduce this.

ok, please let's all put info in this bug to track this issue: http://bugs.amahi.org/issues/show/398

yeh, webvnc is remote desktop. needs a desktop to be able to work!

you can try VNC or FreeNX.

Hi again...

Yesterday evening, apps stopped working again :( No obvious reason. I was away for the afternoon... When i came back home i wanted to showoff to some friends - and dark again :( Today after a reboot - still no sign of life - none of the apps work, refresh of page doesnt help. But a new thing today: pinging the apps gives me a request timed out... That means some service is down? It still opens the http://hda - the dashboard...

edit:

when looking at the bugreport i've came to the question that have been bothering me from the begining: the dhcp in my linksys router... I wanted to leave it ON, since, for now, my amahi box is not allways on (untill everything is setup, and i put it in another room), so i wanted to switch off the dhcp server in the hda dashboard (http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Turning_off_DHCP), but there is nothing similar to this in the dashboard - so I don't realy know if dhcp on amahi is on or off :S

about the bug report:
- client OS where the problem occurs:
----> windows 7 64bit, windows 7 32 bit, windows xp, linux mandriva 2010, Kubuntu 9.10

- is your DHCP lease in the client one from Amahi? are you sure?
----> how can I test that?

- is your DHCP server in the router/gateway turned off?
----> dhcp in router is ON - I want to switch off the amahi dhcp

- if on windows, do you have some antivirus software running on the client?
----> I have a antivirus and an aditional firewall - I have uninstall both for the testing...

And again - on the fedora/amahi box I can access all apps without a problem!

Another EDIT:

apps regained life again... all but ajaxterm... but this morning none of the apps worked even on the amahi box! And again i did nothing in the meantime, and now it works again...

Could there be a problem because I am running amahi on fedora 12 64bit sistem?

I'm no Amahi expert that is for sure.. but I was having this similar issue.. I was able to resolve it. Not sure which of the following did it or if it is just a coincidence and it will stop resolving IP addresses any minute but here is what I did.. I will try and put it in order.

From any of the client PCs not the Amahi server.
Ipconfig /all
Make sure your Connection-specific DNS Suffix is your domain name you set up.
DHCP Server and DNS Servers are your Amahi Servers IP address

I ran ipconfig /flushdns

Then I tried pinging a computer name on the network and any and all resovled to some 208.x.x.x openDNS or something.
Then I tried ping pcname.domain.name and it failed host unknown
after looking at what my ping resolved too I noticed it was appending my domain name on whatever I typed..

So I took a look at the advanced settings for TCP\IP more so the DNS Tab and I had added a while back DNS Suffixes.

I took them out and a way I went. Knock on wood....

Hope this helps someone..

Just a quick note. I have just had the exact same problem and this solved it. I backed up settings on my router and then brought back in some old ones to try to make my xbox play fair and the old settings had the DHCP enabled. This screwed everything up and after working it out and then switching it off again, I had to flush the IP settings of the PC's and the DNS resolution worked again. Mind you the xbox is still not being very compliant.

Anyone know how to force it to refresh the IP settings. Don't tell me to switch it off and back on again. There seems to be some ninja setting in there that isn't refreshing.
