cannot ping 68.180.206.184

Postby rocketscove » Mon Nov 17, 2014 3:47 pm

A little background. Amahi has been serving my small home network for several years.
Today I suddenly lost dns. Could not access anything on lan or www. My server is running on an old Samsung n150 netbook with a usb fan/support. The fan plug had apparently shorted and lugged the netbook down.

Well, no problem just reboot and go...NO...
After pulling rj45s and setup only one computer connection I got it working (Sorta).
Your troubleshooting procedure:
1-ping hda.....OK
2-ping router...OK
3-ping 68.180.206.184 ----NO---just hangs forever
4-ping yahoo.com......OK
5-access http://hda in a browser on the hda .....OK

http://hda.....(from browser on hda)....OK

Confused!!!!! if I can access yahoo (name resolved) why can't I access the yahoo server at 68.180.206.184 ??????

Can someone please guide me outa this mess without reinstalling amahi ??
I have it on a single computer plus the hda for now and ip rououte is:

$ ip route |grep default
default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 proto static
and this client can ping hda, yahoo, and of course the router. But not the 68...yahoo.

I think I have a clonezilla image somewhere, if I can find it.

I don't believe 68.180.206.184 is a pingable address. I tried and got a time out. If it is local to your network, then that would be why I cannot access it. Otherwise that tells me the address is bad.

Why would you want to access an internet site by IP?

From the amahi wiki:
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Networ ... leshooting

Step 1

From your hda itself (via ssh or at the desktop in a terminal), can you:

ping hda (it should ping the IP of your HDA; this ensures the dns server is working)
ping router (it should ping the IP of the router; this ensures your HDA can see the router)
ping 68.180.206.184 (this ensures you can see the rest of the world)
ping yahoo.com (this ensures your dns server can see the world)
Access http://hda in a browser (or use curl in a terminal)
------------------------------------------------------------------
I did not want to....just blindly following the big boys.......
Seriously It did not make sense...and the url according to whois is a Yahoo site. Probably should edit the wiki....
Looks like my problem is SOLVED.. still have some clean up to get my nfs shares back and all the junk computers back on amahi....

Thanks...

I see the IP address in the wiki. Never noticed it before. Will see what I can do to change or remove it.

Just change the example IP address to one of Google's: 8.8.8.8
It always works for me.
