Moving existing Amahi data drives to a new installation

Postby fitzy89 » Thu Aug 22, 2013 2:12 pm

Not sure if this should be in the installation section or elsewhere, if this is the wrong category I apologise :)

I've currently got an Amahi 6 Fedora install up and running with a few drives in it, my whole system is a mess having not set it up correctly in the first place and manually fixing things afterwards. For this reason, and also due to limitations of that hardware I am currently running, I would like to setup a complete new Amahi 7 server.

My new server will have a new, clean system drive which will be the only one connected during installation to keep things clean. I currently have Greyhole setup on my current server, and 3 hard drives each at least 50% full of data. What is the best/easiest/preferred method of transferring these drives into the new system without losing the current data? I will be adding Greyhole to the new Amahi 7 system too, is it as simple as just putting the new drives in, setting up fstab and greyhole will recognise the files on there or would I need to move the data off, clear the drives and copy it all back? I should add that the drives are 2x 1TB and 1x2TB, and I've got a spare unused 2TB drive I can use for temporary storage, and this drive will eventually be added to the new server as part of the pool.

I don't need to keep any current system settings or apps, all I am looking to transfer is the data.

Any advice would be gladly appreciated.
Thanks!

Looking for some assurance about adding my drives to a new install and didn't see the point setting up a new thread. I've already got an Amahi 6 running with 3 data drives and now setting up a completely new Amahi 7 system and want to change my data drives over. I read the wiki and just need assurance I'm doing the right thing cos I'm not great with linux.

I set up the AMahi 7 and it seems to be working but can't access it by VNC so will have to go down the SSH route unless there are any other options.

To back up the files do I just use the gedit command and copy the contents into notepad on my pc? I've done that and thought there would be more in them.

I've got 2x2tb and 1x3tb data drives, will I be able to mount them using mount -a after updating the fstab file or do I need to do anything else for the 3tb drive as I had to when adding it to my amahi 6 rig. This is a completely new build hence why the amahi 6 is still up and running.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

That is because Amahi 7 is headless, no desktop GUI installed. You have to install/setup VNC on the server.

Please elaborate on what you mean by this statement.

You will need to follow the same process you did initially to install them on AMahi 6. Follow the guidance https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding ... o_your_HDA but skip the formatting portion.

Yes those are the correct files to back up.

As far as VNC, can you elaborate on what did not work. I have been testing it with Amahi 7 and works fine for me.

Time for update, I didn't get a chance to fix the hda last week but kept getting an error couldn't connect using VNC. I decided to start from scratch and installed the full DVD version and now have it up and running and can connect via VNC, gnome desktop is very different to my amahi6.

Still not got the data disks set up but hopefully get a chance to try to get that sorted later today or tomorrow. Do I need to install greyhole before adding the disks?
