Installing a printer with the Express CD

Postby fugue » Thu Feb 23, 2012 9:36 pm

I’m trying to install a Brother MFC-7220 USB printer/fax/scanner on Amahi 6.1.0-1 with Fedora 14. I’ve installed the LPR and CUPS drivers for the printer but all of the Wikis I’ve read assume you have a GUI installed on the HDA. I’ve tried searching this forum, Fedora’s and Google for a solution but with no joy. I tried a generic install using Webmin but failed.

Does anyone know how to install a printer and make it visible to my Samba and Mint 12 clients using commands in a terminal? Installing Gnome to get the printer working on the network is a last resort.

Thanks.

Have you looked at the guidance here?

Thanks for the reply Bigfoot. That's the first place I tried but the wiki assumes you have a GUI installed on the HDA.

Install VNC (http://www.amahi.org/apps/VNC) and use VNC Viewer from your client to access the GUI. That would be the easiest route in my opinion.

I must be missing something. I can access a GUI on the HDA even though I didn't install Gnome or X on the HDA (the main reason for using the Express CD in the first place) using VNC?

You'll have to point me to where I can learn to install a VNC shell on the server using command lines. I just did a search and can't find that anywhere. Just to be clear; I do not have a desktop installed on the Amahi server.

Thanks again.

Yes. That app has a convenience fee, so you need to log into the web site and purchase it. Once purchased, it will show up in your available apps section.

It is a good app and once installed, you can access the HDA via the VNC client with no additional setup required.

Thanks Bigfoot. I'll give it a go. I'm installing tigervnc-server manually right now and will let the forum know how it goes.

Edit 1: Installed the tigervnc-server but only saw a black screen with a few check boxes in the top left corner. Searched the forum and saw others had the same result. Gave in and I'm installing Gnome packages. Then I will get back on topic about installing the printer.

Should install Amahi VNC app. It makes this easier.

The VNC app doesn’t appear under the Apps section on the dashboard (at least on mine). Edit 1: Because I didn't log into the App... errr... Place and purchase it.
However, I was successful in installing the GUI and then the printer. I kept Gnome at runlevel 3 and can VNC into it without a problem. After that, installing the printer was a snap.

Fedora 14 doesn’t know what a MFC-7220 is but the settings for the MFC-7320 work just fine. Same kind of printer just a different form factor.

I am now happily printing from all of my machines. All points to you Bigfoot.

Awesome! Glad to hear you got it all sorted out. I don't use my HDA for printing any more as I have a networked printer. But at least I remember how much a pain it was when I did have one connected.
