Hi there,
As a total newbie to Linux, I am trying to setup an Amahi system (Fedora 14 and Amahi 6) and learn a little bit about the OS at the same time.
I am following the very good tutorial for newbies, and the screenshots drive me smoothly through the Fedora 14 install.
However, when it comes to the HDD part, I can't find a precise answer.
Here is my hardware: 60 Gb sata (sda) and two 2Tb sata (sdb and sdc).
I want to use sda as the system disk only and sdb & sdc as the storage for my files. I'd like to use greyhole as well.
Here is the partition of sda, following the "installation without LVM" wiki page (adding a home partition):
sda1 500MB /boot ext4
sda2 15000MB /home ext4
sda3 8192MB swap (I have 4GB of RAM)
sda4 33538MB extended (was created automatically when adding a 4th partition)
sda5 33537MB / ext4
At this point sdb and sdc are Free.
Questions are:
1/ why is there this Extended partition?
2/ does it matter and should I use LVM?
3/ and most importantly, how should I partition & mount sdb and sdc? Both as /var/hda/files or as /var/hda/files/drives/drive1 and .../drive2? I would like to avoid having /var/hda/files/ on sda.
I have read that I should disconnect the additional drives when installing, but if i do that, where, when and how do I add files partitions? And question 3 remains anyway.
Thank you for your help.
Fresh install with 3 HDDs
Re: Fresh install with 3 HDDs
Hello,
My recommendation would be to follow the Fedora install, but not use LVM. See the wiki page at http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Install_without_LVM. If you OS drive is quite large, you could make another partition and use it for Greyhole storage pool. Thats what I did with my 160GB drive, 60GB total for all the OS stuff and 100GB for Greyhole.
During the install process, do not do anything with the extra drives. I often disconnect them to keep from messing things up. Then install Amahi and once you have everything up and running, you can then add the drives following the wiki guidance at http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding_ ... o_your_HDA.
This would give you the desired result you seek I believe.

Re: Fresh install with 3 HDDs
Thanks a bunch. What if I don't want to use the system disk for storing files, can I install Amahi without specifying the /var/hda/files/ directory?
Re: Fresh install with 3 HDDs
That's what I did, was made 1 drive /var/hda/files. What you do is install as normal, then when you do do the wiki guide on adding a second hard drive, you can mount it as /var/hda/files.

Re: Fresh install with 3 HDDs
Ok. Just to be sure as I am completely new to Linux.
1/ I unplug my 2 HDDs I want to use for files, and I keep only my system disk.
2/ I install Fedora 14 as per the tutorial except the part on partitions: I do no create the /var/hda/files/ mount -> my whole disk is split between swap, boot, root and home.
3/ I install Amahi
4/ I add the two other disks as per the tutorial "Add a second disk". Stupid question: can I mount both of them at /var/hda/files/ ?
Thanks
Thierry

Re: Fresh install with 3 HDDs
Yes, that is correct for installation.
As for mounting both drives at /var/hda/files, that cannot be done. Mount one there and the other can be mounted as /var/hda/files/drives/drive1 or something similar.

Re: Fresh install with 3 HDDs
I dont want to complicate things but i installed with 6 HDD and added them all from the first install.
I merely adapted the instructions for adding them and mounted them to the appropriate /hda/files/drives/sdb[-f] points
everything works fine

Re: Fresh install with 3 HDDs
So Ciscoh, you don't have a /var/hda/files/ mount point, just .../drives/sdb[thru f]?
Re: Fresh install with 3 HDDs
i have the /var/hda/files.
the first drive balance after the root, home and swap is mounted there
for the additional drives, i added the /var/hda/files/drives/sdb....

Re: Fresh install with 3 HDDs
Solved !
I did almost what you did Ciscoh:
- fresh install: small HHD with system only, first 2TB hdd mounted as /var/hda/files/
- finished installing fedora
- installed amahi
- added second 2TB hdd as per the tutorial in the wiki
Works like a charm !
Thank you
