problems and bah even more

Postby shanse36 » Fri Dec 17, 2010 9:38 am

so here is my setup and I haven't been so lucky as to get a working installation imo.

mobo : SUPERMICRO MBD-H8SCM Socket C32
cpu: AMD Opteron 4122 Lisbon 2.2GHz
ram: 4gb kingston ecc server value ram unbuffered
optical: lite-on dvd-rw sata
hdd: 500gb wd sata

so here's my issue i am having i went to do the express cd install and got the infinite loop deal on rebooting followed trouble shoot guide and it seemed to have worked. changed my mind about headless and decided to drop a gnome desktop on top and that didn't work following the guide (after fighting it for a bit i gave up and went with option A). so i attempted to install the regular way using a fedora 12 full install disk 64 and it just complains about my on board sata controller (promise raid) based on the error code it throws up [disk error 10 ax=4280 drive ef]. I do some searching on wtf this error means and after looking at some forums is apparently an ongoing thing. i heard one fix was to trick the bios by unplugging all usb stuff prior as machine boots but that seemed silly. I gave it a try anyways and it didn't work :-(

tried the link at the end of this forum post for the supposed solution but it was dead.
info on my error during fedora install

so at the moment i am either looking for :
1.) advice from someone else that has this motherboard or a similar supermicro mobo with the onboard sata controller
2.) a solution to the express headless install not being able to successfully install the gnome desktop
3.) a work around for the full F12x64 /32 install that i am not aware of.

also if someone else wants to answer this one, will i even be able to use the raid setup built in my bios or should i wish for success with greypool?

any help appreciated - I will work on getting the actual error codes up on here. I am still a newbie when it comes to linux imo, so responses should be geared as such if at all possible.

if nothing can be done about building a "good/stable" raid array or the ability to even install the files correctly I will be returning the mobo/ram for this which i hear works awesome with linux SUPERMICRO MBD-X7SPA-HF-O Mini ITX
