Is there a GUI less install, to save on system performance?

Postby derrick1985 » Sun Sep 27, 2009 3:52 am

Hi,

I want to try Amahi on my server, which is currently only a 900mhz cel with 256mb of ram. Is there a way to install Amahi with either a very minimal GUI to save performance, or no GUI at all and run all the configurations through a web browser?

hi, yes this is possible. see the last bullet (runlevel 3) in this setup recommendations page.

256MB RAM is very low. 512 is the minimum recommended.

To notes to add:

Once you have changed the runlevel to 3, if you need the console GUI for some reason, issue the command: startx

If you don't use AMAHI for much beyond file serving, you will be OK with this system, but some of the AMAHI apps will start slow as there will be a bit of swapping.

Also consider when doing the install (hmm will FC10 even LET you do a GUI install at 256Mb?) to go with a swap drive of at least 1Gb. Thing is that Disk Druid REALLY needs to be running in a GUI install, not character install to fiddle with the partition allocations.

not only startx will run, but you can also give the following command on the terminal:
root@localhost# init 5
this will change your runlevel to 5 (really? ;)) which is the graphics mode. After that you may have to press "Ctrl + Alt + F7" to get to the desktop login. After you're done just type "init 3" at a terminal prompt and the system will switch back to headless mode.

i recommended another option (if someone reads this - ),

install amahi as per the instructions 'from a pre installed fedora install '

so how to get fedora installed...

from the dvd boot menu press the [esc] key, and enter the next command...

Code: Select all

linux text
folow the instructions until it asks you to slelect packages... just go about and disble gnome / grafical internet / and xorg system... (maybe there are more, but this worked for me...)

and continue installation ....
Amahi Roadmap and Project managment:
Even though im considered to be an IT Specialist,
you shouldn't ask me linux (command) specific questions,
for in general i'm only able to help with more generic problems.
