New Install of Amahi 8 on HP Mediasmart Server - not working after drive swap

Postby ehreimer » Fri Dec 18, 2015 6:34 pm

I'm trying to install Amahi 8 on a HP Mediasmart home server. As this is a headless system with no disk drive or ports for keyboard, mouse, or monitor, I put the hard drive in a spare PC for the install. Everything works great while it's in the PC, but when I put the drive in the server and boot it, I can't access it. I tried resetting the router in case it was an IP issue, but that didn't work. When I type "http://hda/" in another computer on the network, all I get is "this page can't be displayed".

Can you access the machine via SSH?

Also you might want to check out the Installing HDA on HP Mediasmart guidance in the wiki if you have not already.

Others who have been successful might jump in to assist as well.

Logging in through SSH (via Putty) doesn't work either. I tried the Mediasmart article on the Wiki as well as another article, but they were discussing older installations on Ubuntu (wiki) or Amahi 7 on Fedora 14. The issue I have there is that when I follow the instructions to prepare the hard drive for transplant into the new machine, I get errors that suggest f21 is built differently. Therefore I haven't been able to do anything to get the OS to forget the hardware of the PC used for installation and rediscover all the hardware of the server after transplant.

What install method did you use, Minimal CD or Full DVD?

I would recommend the later to accommodate the hardware change. Minimal is not designed for what you are trying to do with the transplant. Also ensure SSH works on the original machine and everything else before swapping it over to the other server.

The HP Mediasmart servers have not worked well with Amahi in the past. However some have been successful, but not all.

I used the full DVD install. When I try to SSH into the PC before transplant, I can get in, but it doesn't recognize my password and says "access denied". When I try to SSH into the server after transplant, the connection times out without bringing up any login options.

If the SSH is not working on the initial install, then there is a problem. This may be causing issues with the transplant as well.

I presume you are using the user name and password you created during the Fedora 21 install, right?

Need to sort that issue out first.

Did you follow the wiki guidance I posted?
