CLOSED: Trouble installing Amahi 8 after Fedora 21

Postby chiknnutz » Mon Nov 02, 2015 7:42 pm

So I have went thru the Fedora 21 install per the instructions (minimal install, NO Root Password, etc.). Now I am trying to install Amahi 8 per instructions and I receive the following error:

error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (permission denied)

I also tried the "sudo su-" and when I do that, it says, "USERNAME is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported."

This gives me the impression that I should have set up a Root Password.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!!!

Well it appears that you have to create a root password. I reinstalled Fedora and added a root password. I then switched over to the root and the install appears to have worked (installing as I type this). I was unable to get it to work without switching to the root, so why do the instructions indicate otherwise?

When you created the user in Fedora 21, did you ensure you selected Make this user administrator check box?

The creation of a root password should not have been necessary.

Yes I am sure I enabled the "Administrator" check box. I did this twice just to be sure. Meaning, I installed Fedora, checked the Admin box but did not create a root password. Couldn't get the Amahi install to work so I re-installed Fedora a second time, enabled the Admin box but also created a root password this time. I then tried to install Amahi using the non-root password with the same results. It was only after I got in as the root user was I able to get Amahi installed. I understand this is not the way it's intended to work, just stating how my experience went in case someone else encounters this.

No worries.

Wanted to understand what went wrong so we can adjust instructions if needed.

I presume when you created the user, you also created a password as well. If I am mistaken, please let me know.

Yes, I created a password...two actually. I created one for the Admin user and a different one for the Root password.

I meant when you installed for the first time. Can you please share the link you followed for installing Fedora 21?

We want to ensure documentation is accurate and setting a root password was not required previously. We want to understand what might have changed.

Turns out Fedora made a change that requires a root password for CD installs. DVD installs are unaffected.

We have updated the install guidance to reflect the correct actions.

To clarify, I installed from a CD using a DVD drive ;-)

This link shows the recipe I used for the installation.

Thanks for the clarification.

Yea the problem was Fedora changed a package that the Minimal (CD) Install retrieves during installation. This did not affect the Full (DVD) install as the package was already present on the DVD.

Using a DVD drive has no bearing on the issue, it was the CD image itself.
