CLOSED: yum update all... oops

Postby bellamatt » Thu Apr 30, 2015 6:29 am

So I ran a yum update all. It seemed a good idea at the time. It seems to have broken something important in the HDA interface though, as I now get a message:
The Dashboard has encountered an exception! Woopsie. Sorry about that! It could be due to a bug, or very low memory, or very low disk in the root (/) partition.

No disk space problems

RAM is currently running at 2.8/3.6GB (crashplan is running at the moment), still plenty there.

I'm guessing one of the packages I updated messed things up. I tried to do an undo but some of the packages are not available. Am hoping that someone can help me identify whether the update is the problem, and if so, which packages I need to roll back. Here's the total list of packages I updated:

Any ideas? I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling.

ps Not sure if this is in the right forum. I've put it in "installation" because running yum updates is something you do when installing stuff!

This problem has had a rather nasty flow on effect relating to a post I made a few days ago viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5844#p33465. I restarted my machine, but now it cant ping HDA - I need to toggle the DNS servers but I don't have access to the dashboard to do it! Argh! Is there a cli command to do that toggle?

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

I presume this is Fedora 19.

Updating the OS should not have caused any issues. At most, a reboot would have been required. Something else must be causing the issues.

Can you attach the /var/log/yum.log file? Please do not post it here, just attach or a link to it.

Speculation would indicate that an update did not complete successfully. Can you try updating again and see if that helps? Execute the following as root user:

Code: Select all

yum clean all yum update

Thanks bigfoot. I'm sure it's self inflicted! The log is attached. I couldnt see any errors as such. Have updated again, am about to reboot.

This appears to be a heavily modified system. That could be the issue. I see a desktop installed among other things.

The desktop install tends to break things and not recommended.

How did you do the initial install? Express DVD?

I did the install originally from the express, was when Amahi 7 first came out (August 2013). I installed the desktop within the first month to get crashplan going, this was before there was a crashplan app for A7.

I have made modifications over the years to install various apps, until now I've not had a problem with breaking anything in Amahi itself. I'll go through and undo the various things I've recently installed to see if one of them is causing the problem...

That might be a good idea. Also when you installed the desktop, did you use the VNC app or do it manually?

The VNC app has issues with upgrades and was moved back to BETA in the Amahi store. The issues with it go unresolved.

I did it manually (installed the xfce desktop and tigervnc). I don't think the VNC app was out yet when I installed it originally. Perhaps updating the desktop messed something up?

Possibly.

You may have to reinstall if you cannot find what caused the breakage.

Some troubleshooting:

I ran a systemctl list-all --failed and got these ones:

Code: Select all

UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION amahi-anywhere.service loaded failed failed Amahi Anywhere service amahi-greyhole.service loaded failed failed Greyhole for Amahi dropbox.service loaded failed failed LSB: Start up the Dropbox file syncing daemon mysqld.service loaded failed failed MariaDB database server network.service loaded failed failed LSB: Bring up/down networking vncserver@multi-user.service loaded failed failed Remote desktop service (VNC)
I'm not particularly concerned about some of these (I don't have amahi anywhere for example, and havent set up greyhole) but the mysql and network services seem important.

/var/log/mysql/ gave me the following error:

Code: Select all

150501 14:12:03 mysqld_safe Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql /usr/libexec/mysqld: error while loading shared libraries: libjemalloc.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I don't know why this would be, but I did a yum install jemalloc and started up the mysql service. It started up ok.

After I did that I was wondering if it is all due to startup orders. I tried a systemctl start network.service and yes, it started. I probably didnt need to do the jemalloc install, it's probably the same boot order problem. After I did these two things I was able to log in to the hda. Do you think there is something stuffing up the start order of my system at boot? If this is the case the root cause could be anything - the system was up for a long time before the reboot. I think that systemctl can control the order that things are loaded in, need to do some work to tweak it I guess.
