SOLVED: Failing 7.1 express install-Buffer I/O error device

Following the instructions at http://docs.amahi.org/amahi-7-express.html
All is well down to steps 3.8.
At step 3.7 the machine is rebooted (after first removing the install media).
The Operating System does then from the hard drive to a text console. A Login screen that sits for a few moments then the machines reboots itself as is described in step 3.8.
However rather than anything actually starting, all that shows on the screen is rows of text, the last one of which is
Buffer I/O error device sda1 logical block 431.
Above that on the screen are other failures and errors including several lines such as
Failed command READ MULTIPLE
Any ideas?
Change BIOS settings?
Select different options in the "Installation destination" screen?
Hard drives installed are:
* IDE 160G drive - Selected [checked] under "Installation destination" w/automatic partitioning enabled.
* SATA 2T drive *NOT* selected under "Installation destination" as it is supposed to be the storage device.
Only as a test to check for a bad drive I am going to reattempt the install but will swap the drives' selections under "Installation destination" .
