Why is life never simple?

Postby ambsec » Fri Oct 03, 2014 1:54 am

Good morning.

I am trying to re-purpose an old PC, it's a Pentium 4, 1.7Ghz, with 768Mb memory, and standard Mobo graphics (no additional graphics card). As far as I can see, the computer (which ran XP happily for many years) is capable of running both Fedora and Amahi.

So, I start following the instructions for a 32 bit installation (I'm assuming that the processor isn't capable of 64bit). And I can't get Fedora 19 to install. I don't get the option to do a minimum installation. Although the download file was denoted "DVD" not "Live", I get the option to Start Fedora Live or Troubleshooting" which gives a low graphics option, but no minimum install.

So, I guess first thing is can someone please point me in the direction of the correct download which offers the minimum install option, as per the installation instructions. I am in the UK, if that makes a difference.

Did you follow the download links in the wiki? The full DVD does provide for "Minimal Install". Is it possible you did not see it or got the wrong Fedora image?

If you had an option for Fedora Live, doesn't sound like the correct image. The file size if somewhere around 3.5GB to download.

UPDATE: BTW, Fedora's web site says minimum RAM for Fedora 19 is 1GB RAM. That could be your problem.

The image size is approx 4.4G, so I assumed this was more than a Live CD image. The download link in the wiki takes you to a list of mirror sites, it doesn't point you to an actual file. From there I can choose to download virtually anything that Fedora have ever produced. I selected a file named fedora-19-i386-DVD, (from the Oxford University mirror site) which doesn't sound like a LiveCD image to me.

The memory issue would certainly explain why the DVD didn't install correctly, but not why I didn't get the Minimum Install option.

Ok, that does indicate it's not a Live CD.

The Fedora 19 DVD I downloaded was 4.21GB. May you need to try a different site. Not sure if the memory issue caused it to not work as designed.

Try this link.

Thanks for that, Bigfoot. I am currently downloading that image.

Just an update, I used some memory from another dead computer and this PC now has 1½GB - with that I was able to successfully install Fedora 20 XFCE spin, but not Fedora 19 from the original Oxford Uni mirror site. Hopefully, your link will give me the minimal install option, which will hopefully install correctly.

Hopefully it will work correctly. You can also try the USB install option too, although not supported, it does work well.

Your download link wouldn't burn to DVD correctly.

However, having had some success with a Fedora20 LXCE spin, I thought I'd try F19 LXCE spin, and this has installed correctly, and it would appear that Amahi has also installed.

So you were able to get the "Minimal Install" option? Typically Amahi does not install and work correctly with anything other than the pure Fedora 19 DVD.

If you were successful, that is great and we might want to update the wiki with that guidance. Could you elaborate more on how you did the install with this media?

Do we now consider this resolved?
