RESOLVED: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
RESOLVED: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
I completed installation of Amahi Express and thought I had it working enough to load all my static IP addresses and checkout of few to make sure it was working. Subsequently I noted that the Control Panel indicated the HDA was running even though I had stooped it under VMBox. When I went to check ip address assignment again, I noted that ipconfig /release followed bu /renew did not result in updated ip address on a couple of client machines on network. So, even though I could log into HDA, I'm not sure that its working and was wondering if it might have somehow disconnected from the control panel. I recall that in the past, when local HDA was down the control panel would so indicate with paused (?) status. Can you enlighten me on how this should work? I'm thinking that I must have messed something up and would like to know if I need to build a new HDA, etc. As another indicator that something may be messed up (?), I also had noted that installing apps (e.g VPN and Wedmin) was taking impossibly long (never to complete).
Re: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
Could be some demons messing with things. Recommend you check the Servers tab and the Network tab, specifically DHCP server to see if everything is running.

Re: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
Thanks for fast response. I tried as much of he wiki as I thought relevant. I also ran thru the troubleshooter and it didn't find anything. It referred me to the irc channel and I was lost. I logged in, I think, and then realized I was over my head. Don't think I found anyone but then I wouldn't know what to do even if I did. Also on the server, both DNS and DHCP are running. And since I have been known to forget it before, I verified that my router did NOT have DHCP on. I'm still puzzled by the behavior that asking to renew ip addresses on any client does nothing and the fact that the control panel always shows the HDA functioning even when I have it down. Is that normal behavior? I'd prefer not to delete and rebuild because of all the fixed ip addresses I have loaded but is that what it's come to? Thx in advance/
Re: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
Some progress. Right after installing Webmin app, the server crashed with the message about logging problem followed by message:
Application error
Rails application failed to start properly
Rebooting server, shutting completely down and restarting does not fix problem. Not sure how to use problem log. Wondering if install of Webmin messed up server. I can still ssh into server. Need to get back to setup page so that I can continue to check static ip mac-ids since I found one incorrect right before crash.
Anyway to get back to setup webpage? Any attempt to access HDA via browser results in above message.
Thx

Re: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
The status of an HDA is not always correctly identified on the web site. Is this new build using a profile that is old? If so, you really should have created a new one.
My next recommendation would be to check the log files for errors. This shows what logs are located where.

Also have you done the OS updates? That might help as well.

Re: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
Ok I'll check some of the logs. ssh is now denying me access so hopefully I can still get in thru the headless interface. Also, the profile was created new for this installation. I assume you mean initiating os update thru terminal/ssh interface or ?
Re: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
Ok. Yea OS update via SSH. Hope it helps.

Re: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
Im giving up in frustration and failure tonite after a day of little progress that's salvagable. The update didn't work because it said it didn't have enough space (RAM or harddrive, I dunno. Probably RAM?). The logs made little to no sense to me. I couldn't tell what was normal and what wasn't. Nothing glaring stood out. So I'm left unable to proceed with fixing and assigning static ips. Maybe tomorrow. I'll need a little more of a hint on what to do if that would be possible. Or, maybe I'll rebuild again. Would like to know how to avoid in next one.
Re: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
Sorry to hear it's not working out.
I would try to get it running without setting static IPs first. Then add a few and test until you are sure it's working ok.
I complete start over might be best so you can ease into it this time and ensure it's working correctly. I would recommend once you get Amahi installed, update the OS next to ensure you have all the patches in place.
Using VirtualBox can be a pain as well. Have to get the settings just right. I use Proxmox instead and works great for me. Always had problems with VirtualBox.

I have been using this for over a year with great success. I have multiple VMs running at the same time too. So far it's been the most solid solution I have used.

Re: HDA coming "disconnected" control panel?
Thanks for timely response. I'll probably rebuild as you suggest. I'll keep you posted. At this time I have too many machines and time invested in VB but I'm curious enough to look into it.
