ANy Help before I abandon Amahi completely?

Postby khalfdan » Thu Feb 27, 2014 10:49 am

Well so far I've spent a good 48hrs and gotten absolutely f all to show for it. Working on installing amahi (supposed to be easy) on a lenovo t400.
Well the express install dvd installs cleanly time and again but never does anything except dump me at a text login with no second reboot. No amount of manual reboot has resolved this.
So second option becomes Full dvd minimal install of fedora. Again clean install and left at same login prompt. This time however no network connection after login (so only step 1 of the wiki instructions (login as root) can be completed. nmcli doesn't see wifi (the installer did) and it doesnt accept a wired connect. So no joy here either.

Same PC was running fedora without any issues before being wiped to become my server.

So I've looked in the wiki (no help) and searched the forums (no help) and wasted a huge amount of time. Anyone with any ideas or is amahi just garbage?

Hello,

Sorry to hear you having issues. Let me ask a few questions:

a. Does your machine meet the minimum requirements for Amahi?
b. Did you verify that the CD and DVD images were not corrupt?
c. Did you follow guidance at http://docs.amahi.org for Express CD and https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Amahi_7_full_DVD for Full DVD?
d. When you got the login prompt from the Express CD, did you try logging in? If so, what was the result.

Why we can appreciate your frustration, I don't feel your comment

is appropriate. Seems a bit harsh to throw rocks, then ask for help at the same time.

We are happy to try and help you determine the cause of your issues.

a-c = yes and I followed the instructions to a t. And I remembered to try and disable my usual dhcp server and try running it off amahi instead which only resulted in nothing.

d: admin login succesful, no change after that, no reboot, left machine for about 1 hour then several manual reboots with same results.

I'm sorry you don't feel it is appropriate, but it has been a supremely frustrating couple of days and very little help or documentation of any use whatsoever has been forthcoming and for a software system that brands itself on ease of install it has been disappointing.

I thank you for your help.

Edit. Also I should mention that I have tried both 64 and 32 bit architecture (express and full dvd installs respectively - I have not tried 64 bit full dvd)

Thanks for the clarification. I understand your disappointment. I would probably felt the same way and given up by now. We have not seen many issues like this that were not easily resolved. This is puzzling.

When you did the initial login, was that after waiting for the second reboot or before? The first time you reboot and it shows the admin login prompt, it's not ready yet. It should then go fetch packages and finish the Amahi install. I hav seen that part take 5-10 minutes depending on network speed.

I wonder if there was possibly a connectivity issue after the initial reboot and it never got those packages?

Not sure what to have you check next. Will have to think about this one a bit.

well I've tried both (having installed multiple times) with the same result. I have at one point left the machine after reboot 1 for roughly one hour.

I was actually logging back on because it had occurred to me to ask what you just answered above: If the network connection is prerequisite for the second reboot and fedora 19 minimal somehow loses my network connectivity as evidenced by my experience with the full dvd install then maybe the issue is in fedora minimal's way of handling the network in my specific case? At least it seems to me it would explain what I am seeing.

So then, how to check and test network connectivity after first reboot in the console?

Also one previous user on a lenovo t420 reported a similar issue that was however reported as resolved after multiple manual reboots. I will link the thread in next post.

this one viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5175

by the description in post #1 it looks to be the same problem on the same hardware (nearly).

oh and in addition I should mention I run a WPA secured wifi network that I use during the gui part of the install process and the installer connects flawlessly to this which initially led me to conclude that this wasn't an issue.

Yes I remember that post. It would be nice if the person could provide some clarification on how it got it working. I am not sure what he meant by turning it on and off. That could be power off or reboot LOL

This is definitely an odd issue and unfortunately Fedora does not play well with some hardware.

well true :)

unfortunately he hasn't gotten back to me after my request for clarification earlier.
Fedora may not play well with some hardware but the OS on that particular laptop used to be Fedora and that had no issues whatsoever.
