move installation from AMD 2400+ system to VIA C7

I have currently installed Amahi on a AMD 2400+ system.

I want to use this guide:
http://www.howtogeek.com/63253/upgrade- ... with-amahi

and now move the disk into a system that has a VIA C7 CPU.

So totally different system

is it really enough to just make sure you change the detection of the ethernetcard at boot, to make sure that it will boot again on this different system?

doesnt the new system require a totally different kernel?

In general terms, a Linux installation should be able to work when transferred to a different system.
Linux does a really good job of hardware detection and it generally is installed with all of the drivers it might need.

If your current installation is 32 bits however you may want to consider installing a 64 bit version of the OS (or not; your choice).

hi thanks for the reply.

my setups are both 32 bit, so I dont think I will benefit from a 64bit installation? or will I?

I only mentioned a 64 bit installation because you were moving to an I7 which is certainly capable of running a 64 bit os. If your hda system is only going to be a server and not also a workstation, then 64 bits probably wont make much of a difference. You probably would only convert to 64 bits if you needed the extra performance.

Besides, it sounds like your goal is to plug the drive into your new machine and have it 'just work', which it should.

Have fun with it!

yes suc6!

transfered teh HD to my energy efficient VIA C7 system and it works...

2nite I did a test run...playing 1080i movie over the network SMB and copying 5GB of data at the same time and the CPU load never went over 50% and memory stayed below 400MB...while WHS would be hitting CPU load of 100% all the time and using near 900MB or little more of memory...so far...I am very happy with my AMAHI HOME SERVER....thanks you guys...

:D

It sounds like Bigfoot has you taken care of!

Greyhole is one area that I have no experience with, since I haven't used it.
I'm running my system on LVM on top of Raid 1. When I need to add more drives, I'll probably give Greyhole a try.

Thanks for the shout, though!
