64 or 32 bit? The 64 bit express cd fails to install

Postby jonathankonrad » Wed Jul 13, 2011 3:16 pm

Just setting up a new Amahi box. The 64 bit express CD fails to install. Am I losing a lot of power by going 32? This is an old box any way. With only a 1.6 ghz core 2 duo. Thanks

What processor is it? I didn't notice any c2d's at 1.6Ghz, only the original Core, many of which where 32-bit processors.

Either way the benefit of 32/64bit is minimal.

Using the 32bit expressCD, If you have 4GB+ and want to take advantage of it, note the kernel that is installed after the installation is complete. The PAE Kernel was explicitly excluded during the 32-bit CD creation to keep the iso size down, the installer "should" pull it from the repo during installation if your system can use it. If it doesn't you'll want to "yum install kernel-pae" as root after installation and reboot.

You are right. It is not a core 2 duo. Just a duo I believe. At any rate it has two cores running at 1.6 Ghz. I ran Linfo and it reports this kernel: 2.6.35.13-92.fc14.i686.PAE so I believe it's working well. I do not have 4 GBs of RAM in this box so I'm sure I will be alright with 32 bit. Thanks for the input.

Cool, I only tested the 32-bit expressCD in a 512MB RAM VM so thanks for the confirmation that Anaconda does the right thing and fetches the proper bits if the system has the additional memory.
