Which hostname and domain to chose during installation?

Hi all,

after getting into trouble with outgoing mails (my hostname and domain i entered during installation couldn't get resolved) and some hardware refreshs, i want to reinstall amahi from scratch.

One question i have is regarding the hostname and domain to choose during installation.
Currently i have hda.home.com 8which was the recommendation on some amahi installataion wiki)

As far as i understood, we all have a DDNS named something.yourhda.com. Under this adress, my hda should be reachable from "outside". For me, it should be spline.yourhda.com (this is shown in my control panel at https://www.amahi.org/users).
From "inside" i can access it with http://hda

So, does it make sense to give my hda the name "spline" and the domain "yourhda.com" if a will be asked during installation?
Or will i get into trouble?

Thanks and regards

spline

Hello,

During the initial installation of Fedora 14, you could specify whatever you want for a hostname and domain. It should be whatever you indicated in your Amahi profile though.

When I do test installs, I do not configure a hostname or domain in the Fedora 14 setup. Then when I install Amahi, my profile indicates what I want my server to be know as.

Keep in mind that setting up your server to do mail is a bit more complicated. I do not believe the username.yourhda.com will resolve MX records for mail without some manual work. Keep in mind Amahi is not designed to be a mail server out of the box nor is it advertised as such.

Depending on what you need for a mail server, you might consider trying the Amahi Mail System which is currently under development. See the wiki at:

http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Amahi_Mail_System

It is based off of a howtoforge.net tutorial and will allow you to add any existing mail account to it. Since its a virtual mail system, you can do quite a bit from what I have found so far. As designed, you can send mail on setup from your hda. Might be something that will work for you.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

thanks for the reply.
I don't want to use my hda as a full blown mail server.
Yesterday i tried to configure my hda in a way, that the log files are mailed to my private mail account.
I followed the wiki to enable outgoing mail. Doesn't seem to work ;-((
I have no idea what went wrong, but my first guess was, that the hostname / domain configuration is wrong.
I get strange error messages in my hda root mailbox.

I tried that one a while back and did not work for me. It was initially documented using Fedora 12, so might need fixed to work with Fedora 14.

Have you tried this one?

Hi Bigfoot,

thanks for the link to use GMail with Amahi.
I followed the instructions and changed some parameters as i do not use GMail but Web.de (German mail provider).
Finally it works!!!

I have no idea, why sendmail doesn't work on Amahi on F14. But Postfix is the better choice anyway (IMHO).

Thanks again and best regards
