On the Wiki it says:

"To set up a network printer attached to the HDA from Windows, you need to perform a few simple steps. Each machine that will need access to the printer will also need the drivers installed. This will be accomplished at the time you connect them to the printer.

* Connect the printer to the HDA (parallel or USB) and ensure it is powered on. It should automatically detect the printer and set it up for you.

* Samba should be set up already for serving printers "

When I attach a canon ix4000 via USB I get a pop-up message that the driver is missing...it searches for a few seconds then the message disappears and I cannot access the printer again. I tried "default printer" "printing", neither show the printer, I can't see it on the network either. What do I do when the HDA DOESN'T detect the printer and set it up?

Some printers may not have drivers for Linux. Recommend you google to see if there is a printer driver for yours. It may also tell you how to install it. I have an HP and it was detected automatically, so I got lucky.

I presume you did all this from the HDA desktop. If not, try that and see if it helps. You could also check the driver disk that came with your printer to see if there is a linux printer driver on it. Many don't provide one, but you never know.

What happened is that after many attempts I downloaded a driver and presto amahi noticed my printer. However I got an error message everytime <i tried to install it from one of my PCs (win7 64b) I got an error message :"windows cannot connect to the printer.operation could not be completed (error 0x0000000d)". I followed the advise on this page http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding_ ... ed_printer and sucessfully added the printer. BUT...when I use it from one PC, I lose contact from the other PC and have to reinstall it, and vise versa! Tried several times, no luck. So now I have reattached the printer to my aging Synology NAS which detected it immediately and which allows all my PCs access. Why is there always so much trouble with Linux based systems? I would really like to use them more, but they demand so much time and research to get them working I nearly always give up! (I realise the NAS is Linux based, it has different problems )
