Express CD Install - Freezes when running pre-installation

I am using an express cd to install amahi 5.4 onto a compaq presario 5000 (old), the installation freezes when it starts to run the pre installation scripts.

Every now and again the DVD drive fires up but it doesnt seem to be doing anything.

Is it possible this is because of a lack of RAM - i am trying to get away with 350 meg RAM.

Would it be worth trying to install using the CD drive instead?

I think that would be your first test yeah.

350M should be enough RAM (absolute minimum is around 128M I think)

I have tried using the cd drive instead, still the same problem. could it be it doesn't like my computer or might it be a dodgy cd.

try switching to a console (ctrl-alt-f1 or -f2 or -f3 until you get a hash sign '#'), then type free.

my understanding is that in fedora 12, the yum processes can take a lot of memory at installation time. It could be that it's eating memory at install time.

once installed, you will typically need like 256 to run a number of apps with a moderate amount of media and load.

find a console and

Code: Select all

tail -f /var/log/messages
or

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail -20
and see if you notice issues.

Okay, that plan failed so trying again with the express cd
try switching to a console (ctrl-alt-f1 or -f2 or -f3 until you get a hash sign '#'), then type free.

find a console and

Code: Select all

tail -f /var/log/messages
This comes up with

Code: Select all

tail: caot open '/var/log/messages' for reading: no suh file or directorry
or

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail -20
and see if you notice issues.
this comes up with

Code: Select all

dmesg: invalid option--'2' usage: dmesg [-c] [-n level] [-r] [- bufsize]

When I press ctrl-alt-f3 it says

Code: Select all

(zenity:counting number, currently at 11560): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Does anyone have any idea about this, I feel a bit abandoned.

Not sure what the problem would be. Ensure you have the latest Express CD and good connectivity. I don't believe it is RAM related, but could be.

I have done several installs successfully with the Express CD. Lets try and see if we can get things sorted out for ya. Try it again and see if the same thing happens?
