Peculiar install problems

Postby toothandnail » Mon May 24, 2010 9:38 pm

I've been running an Amahi server for a little while. I've also configured and installed a version for a friend. The first install of this server was made to fairly old hardware, just to see if it was what he needed. He has now attempted a new install to more recent (and more powerful) hardware. The new machine is an AMD Athlon in an Ausus motherboard, using a Via chipset.

The Fedora install was ok (though the startup does not show the normal Fedora infinity symbol, using a solid progress bar along the bottom of the screen instead. Even so, Fedora seems to work without problems.

The problem comes when the Amahi install is done. In one instance, there was no dashboard icon on the desktop, in others the icons have appeared as they should. The strange part is that, each time the Amahi install has been done, the menu entry for software updates has vanished, and the update notifier no longer appears on the toolbar either.

I did a clean reinstall yesterday, after wiping the hard drive, and got exactly the same problem. As soon as Amahi is installed, the Fedora software update menu entry goes, as does the update notifier. In addition, while some Amahi apps will install, WebERP (which is the main reason for installing in this instance) goes through the motions, but never completes the install. It will download, then sit with a 'preparing install' message forever.

Does anyone have any ideas where I should be looking to sort these problems out?

Paul.

Hello,

First of all, have the Fedora updates been completed? There have been over 500 updates to the OS that might be the cause of some of these issues. There are 2 different splash screens for Fedora that you could see. The progress bar at the bottom is one and of course the symbol the other. I am unsure why they change, but the OS loads either way.

Also, do you have good connectivity? Often when the network connection is not stable, things don't work out as well.

I will take a look at the WebERP app and see if everything appears in order with it. Please keep us posted.

Its been tried both ways. In the latest instance, I ran the security updates, but nothing else. I did then have to reinstall Firefox, since something in one of the security updates seems to have upset it. After reinstalling Firefox, I was able to start the Amahi install, but that then led to the same problem repeating.
Also, do you have good connectivity? Often when the network connection is not stable, things don't work out as well.
This system is on a fairly slow link (its in a remote rural area, running on a wirelss link), but while its slow, it is quite stable.

:) Will do. I'm going to have to reconfigure my Amahi server beofre I can restart it as well - I've just moved and have a new ISP with a quite different router setup, so I will have to build a new profile for my own server. I'll also try some more with the machine currently having problems.

Good luck and I hope things work out better this next time. I find that doing a yum update works best so you get all the updates. I have been operating my HDA for over a year, including reinstalls and never have any issues.

I think some times the security updates cause other issues and by doing the full update, it eliminates any problems. Just my 2 cents :)
