ok, moredruid. Using putty from my XP laptop, I ran "shutdown now" to begin the process of taking out my TV card. However, when I walked over the HDA, the screen said something about being logged out to a single user or something. I'm sorry I don't have the proper text in front of me.

edit: "Telling INIT to go to single user mode"

This confused me. The HDA was in a terminal session with root (I believe). So I ran "shutdown now" again from the HDA terminal. At that point, it looked a bit like the computer was restarting (instead of shutting down) and when it was done, I was given the opportunity to login. So, thoroughly confused about what was happening, I did. On a lark, I decided to check out Firefox, to see if I could get online... I could!

Then I went and got my haircut ...

When I got back, I decided I should try to run with this... I installed lshw and one of the updates. I'll post more in a bit

hmm strange...
that's why I always give the command "init 0" (which basically means full stop). init 1 is single mode, 2 is multi user without network, 3 multiusers with network, 4 is freely definable, 5 is multiuser with network and graphical stuff and 6 is reboot.

BTW the above is for most distro's, some will deviate in their default runlevels (for instance Debian does).

hey... I haven't given up on this, I've just been very busy (left town for a few days too). I'm planning on getting a new hard drive tonight and trying again ASAP.

thanks for your guidance, moredruid

edit:

oh, some updates I should have made: the restarting technique was (as you might expect) not very successful when I had to do it again later. So i'm back w/o external internet access, I don't know how to confirm it, but I'm gonna guess that you're right about the hard drive (hence my statement above)

I always use:

Code: Select all

shutdown -h now
for halt
and

Code: Select all

shutdown -r now
for reboot

hey all,

thanks for your pointers. the TV card was the problem. I got a different one, and it works fine now. I'm still having problems getting mythtv to work (I can't find any channels when I scan), but Amahi seems stable, I've restarted a few times and nothing has failed .. no apparent file system problems.

If anybody can give me some tips on mythtv, I would *greatly* appreciate it. I have a DViCO FusionHDTV7 Dual Express. MythTV sees it and adds the 2 tuners correctly (I think). I'm trying to get US broadcast ATSC Digital Channels, but when I scan I end up with nothing. I tried adding the channels manually and downloading listings data from schedules direct but I don't think it's working yet.

EDIT: I should mention that I did download, compile, and install the latest v4l-dvb drivers as well as the xc5000 drivers.

Additionally, I've had a problem connecting my frontend to this backend. Is the mysql database open to network connections? I checked phpMyAdmin and it looks like "skip networking" is off -- which I think is correct for my purposes. I'm not sure what else to check. I've set the PIN on the backend to 0000 and I've set the IP correctly on both the front and back, but no dice. I tried using hostnames too, but I got the same result.

Any advice?

ok, I'm losing it. I can't get this card to tune to anything. I can't tell if it's even working. I scheduled a recording through mythweb on a channel that I had manually added, but it didn't seem to record.

I'm going to get an HD Homerun (dual, I hope) at Microcenter today. These seem more reliable, but really.. I have no idea. I'm very much lost

i'm at work now, so I don't have the info in front of me, but here's what happened:

dmesg complained that it couldn't upload the correct firmware for the xc5000 receiver (which is a part of my card). I don't know what it means by "upload" but it, very helpfully, provided the name and version of the firmware that it wanted. I did a google search and found it (i'll provide this info later). I downloaded it, moved it to lib/firmware and rebooted. Voila, scans work!

I didn't have time to test this fully, but I was able to scan and add many channels through mythtvsetup. scandvb also gave me some data, but i didn't use it.

more to come

ok.. it's working!!! yay!

so, here's what happened:
dmesg told me to use "dvb-fe-xc5000-1.6.114.fw " instead of the firmware that I learned about from the mythtv wiki (similar xc5000 firmware but different version)

that allowed me to scan, problem 1 solved!

for the frontend connecting to backend issue, i had to verify the port number (it's the default, no duh) by looking at phpmyadmin (because i am biased to gui-style interfaces)
after that, I had to create a user in the database for my mac mini frontend (because it's using the localhostname as the host for its login) .. google "mysql add user" for that one.

after that, i tried it once or twice, running the mac os x pre-compiled frontend with "-p" (prompt for manual configuration) failed to connect, but once configuration was there, i ran it without "-p" and it connected!

hooray!

thanks to all for helping. If there's someplace i can add some info on this, letm e know,,
