Need help with gateway information.

Postby testproggie » Mon Nov 01, 2010 11:00 am

I have a WISP that runs linux and is 192.168.100.1. It assigns 192.168.100.2 to my Netgear router. That is the internet side of the router. On the user side the router is 192.168.1.1 and the computers are assigned IP addresses in that range by DHCP.

OK, I install Amahi using 192.168.100.1 as the internet gateway and I'm good until the final reboot when Amahi fully takes over (I disabled DHCP in the router before that last reboot) and I totally lose the internet. No access to the router, no access to the WISP although I have good access to the server.

The WISP unit has its own DHCP server that I cannot disable so I didn't change where it plugs into the router and it normally assigns an IP to the router on that side of the equation.

Please give me some guidance as I've searched to the best of my abilities, but can't find this particular problem described. Should I have used 192.168.100.2 or 192.168.1.1 or something else entirely? Thoroughly confused by this addressing stuff... :?

What is a WISP (Google doesn't seem to help)? Why does it have multiple interfaces?

I'm confused about your network configuration. Is your Netgear router connected to your ISP?

Can you explain your layout a little more?

Thanks

A WISP is a wireless internet provider. Think of it as a souped up wireless G network that is working over a total of about 30 miles (with relays and such). Not super fast, but it is the only thing available besides dial-up, and our dial-up was really slow... I suppose in the end it is as if my router is connected to a cable or DSL modem. I'm just having trouble figuring out which address to use for a gateway. The router says the "gateway" is 192.168.100.1, which is the WISP equipment. The router on the user side is set up to 192.168.1.1 and it assigns the various computers from that base address. I'm guessing that I should set the Amahi "gateway" to 192.168.1.1 and ignore the WISP/internet side of things. Then of course shut off DHCP in the router and it should work. Some glimmerings are starting to shine through - I hope. Any thoughts as to if that is correct?

:D SUCCESS! I changed the Gateway IP to 192.168.1.1 using the terminal thingy with hda-change-gw (IP Address) that I found elsewhere in the forums and it worked. While I realize that Amahi is somewhat simplified in it's install and such, if you're somewhat clueless then the instructions aren't simple enough. Not a complaint, but some people would have given up quicker than I did and I hate to lose them so quickly when this is actually a pretty good idea for someone who wants an in-house server.

Now to install some web apps and see how they work 8-)

If you could help us refine those instructions to be better, that would be awesome. Might be a good idea to add a wiki page at http://wiki.amahi.org and post the url here. You can gain access and add pages to the wiki using your amahi.org credentials.

As I was writing that last post I was wondering if I could contribute to the Wiki to help others that only have experience with windows. With it being fresh in my mind I think I will work on it. Hopefully I can contribute something useful for us that only know enough to be dangerous
