i just started my reinstallation of my Amahi server
i don't have either internal space for or an external CD/DVD so i had to find a way to do this via USB drive
in my case i have a 16GB SanDisk USB memstick and found this eminent application that helped me convert the ISO into a bootable SUB stick...
the installation is currently running so i will keep this topic updated in time to ensure my failuer or success...
the software i used is available in both Windows and Linux version, downloadable from http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Re: USB Install
i created the USB-bootable with the downloaded Fedora 12 i386 DVD iso
the machine boots perfectly and gives the option as to what to do at boot
choosing the option to install new system it starts the Fedora installation GUI
issues:
install runs just fine up until right after partitioning... then it says something about unable to mount image #1 and give me the option to end the installation or retry...
Missing ISO 9660 Image
The installer has tried to mount image #1, but cannot find it on the hard drive.
Please copy this image to the drive and click Retry. Click Exit to abort the installation.
there is no way to actually find out which image it asks for or where it is actually looking for the image
As you can see this message don't give much of an option at all...
I have both the DVD ISO as well as the Netinstall ISO located on the USB stick in the Images-folder
there is no further information on how to handle this so i guess i am stuck on not installing this at all... or go buy myself a DVD-player (which will after the install be thrown in the garbage more or less)

Re: USB Install
creating USB boot with built-in function to grab ISO of the net...
Used the Fedora 12 x64 Netinstall.
interesting to see you have to tell the booted system the install image is on the HDD (USB is detected as HDD) but once the install started it downloaded all content from the net
interesting is also to see that no matter the installation media the installation ran quite slowly, i say it had to do with the hardware platform
issues:
after partitioning the installation once again staled when looking for image #1

Re: USB Install
so this topic didn't lead to anything other than failure
it would be nice though if someone could solve this issue... somehow
right now my system is belly up and cut open, cable hanging out with drives all over the place...
managed to strip an old system with a IDE DVD which is now hanging by the cables on the outside of the chassi
installation i hope will work better this time...
checking installation media... done!
starting default installation...
last time i did this type of installation was at work... and the guys installing our cabled network failed miserably... so our DMZ didn't work as it should have and this i was trying to use
now at home my network is flawless so the installation worked effortlessly
my lack of linux basic knowledge is the only thing holding me and the installation back
right now my server is up and running with the following issues:
* only system drive is available for storage (which eventually will not be part of storage)
* my previously NTFS formated drives with existing file structure is not available in storage, not even readable by system right now
* system is still belly up with things hanging out of the chassis
* default website is not correctly set. wordpress is to be the default and HDA should be sub domain (www.enlox.com is still pointing to my old webserver but in time it will be pointing to enlox.yourhda.com and here i want wordpress to be default and all other services to be available like hda.enlox.com and so on)
* users are not able to logon to hda apps. error message when logging in says username not available for this and that app/service (calender and some other features so far tested)
more to come

Re: USB Install
there is a reason why we do not support USB installation.
can't you just plug in a cable, since your system is open, to a dvd and install the regular supported way?
we're a small team, we can't support any more than the current ways: Full DVD, express cd, plug edition for ARM, and worst case ... self-install on a "regular" fedora.

Re: USB Install
my issue should actually be:
Why can't Fedora make a USB-stick installation routine for their dist...?
and if you read further in my posts you can see that i DID install using regular DVD-installation.

Re: USB Install
Have you checked the Fedora forums or IRC? They might be able to help with this problem.

Clearly you didn't search these forums first. Been there, worked around that...issues:

good luck!

Re: USB Install
I have added the steps from the forum to the Amahi wiki (http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/USB_Install. I am still updating it, however if anyone follows this guidance and sees something that required update, please do so.
