instructions are not quite the same

Postby LordDelmar » Sun Mar 27, 2011 2:42 pm

Ok, so I'm not a complete n00b here as I've installed Ubuntu and know my way around a PC/Server.

I've just done the Fedora 14 install, 3 times, and it never asks me to add repositories. I am trying to install Amahi to take the place of my very tiresome WHS. I followed the step by step guide the last 2 installs and once I get to the part where it should ask me for the respoitories, it just skips that part and installs Fedora 14. I certainly doubt it is because I am using the 64 bit version (runnning 4GB of RAM).

Once Fedora is installed, I have no clue where to add the repositories but not that this would help. The first install I did it the typical 'sys admin' way by thinking I knew it all and would just pick it up after a fresh install of Fedora and do it via command line.

Nope, I get stuck either at the localhost:2000, or skipping that, trying to add Amahi through yum. I have followed the FAQ step by step for that part as well and just spent the last 5 hours watching the terminal window check for dependencies. Is there something going on with the repository?

Anyway, going to ask for some assistance because this is just silly. My weekend project is turning into work and I work way too hard during the week for my fun projects to turn into that. :)

Thanks

Hello,

Are you using the Full DVD for Fedora 14? There is a link here which shows the step to which the repository is added.

http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Fedora_ ... structions

This is what the web site shows.

Not sure why you would not see this step. Please let us know if you need further assistance.

I downloaded the Fedora 14 version here:

http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-options

The 64 bit version with GNOME.

Burn the image and boot to the disc. Then, once in the live version, tell it to copy to HDD and it will do the install. This setup will never ask you for the repositories during install. I have now done it 4 times, step by step, bit by bit to verify I did not inadvertently skip something important.

Once Fedora 14 is installed, apparently there is no way to add a repository without using command line. I am sadly remembering why I grew tired of fighting Linux and became lazy with Microsoft. Everything was always so much more difficult. Even small things that seem too petty to code really mean a lot to the 'experience' as a whole.

I want to like this, I really do. I want to learn more about linux as I know just enough to be dangerous. The problem is with things like this. If I could simply add a repository, it should work, right?

Well, enough about my rants on Linux. Despite it all I really do love everything the community has done. I'm just frustrated because I honestly do not like not being able to solve a problem. If anyone would prefer to interact real time, I have numerous messengers. Will be available tonight after 1700 central.

If not, I will continue to post here. Who was it that said "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result"?

Can you try installing the DVD version from here: http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-options#formats ?

Downloading now. I will post once I have attempted install. Almost got the process down by memory, but, being A.D.D. I will simply follow the instructions.

Ok, so that did it. Might want to add that to the FAQ or install instructions as an FYI. The normal CD install does not allow you to add a repository, therefore, it might be much more difficult to install Amahi. The DVD seems to have everything in it and is clearly what the instructions were written for.

I will come back and post once everything is up and running. No doubt I will have more questions. :)

Thank you all for your assistance. Per my first post, Linux is where it is because of the community. I will continue to learn and hope to impart the things I learn with others. Now if we could just get the developers to put in simple/stupid things for the average person, the two big companies that are trying to control the world might actually listen.

Will post tomorrow evening, regardless of status. Thank you again.

From http://www.amahi.org/support/instructions

Code: Select all

Software: A bootable Fedora 14 Install DVD Obtain it from the download mirrors or from the torrents Note: There are unsupported install options, such as LiveCD, USB and Net install. These are strongly discouraged, unless you are a Linux expert and have no other choice.
Edit: don't know why it missed this line the first time.
There must be a rogue set of instructions hanging about that still mention the CD(s) from earlier versions of Fedora.

Well, I got it installed and running quite quickly after I got home. I knew I wasn't going mad, but seeing the part posted about the DVD I honestly cannot say if I saw the part about the live CD there or not. I want to say I didn't, but what matters is that it is running now.

I will be sure to mention to the others who run homeservers that I know, to get the DVD not the live CD.

BTW, what is the deal with the CD anyway? Why can you not add a repository? Seems to me that would be a no brainer for an option, but what do I know. I'm a just an admin. :)

Thank you all once again. I will be back with more questions I am sure. Though I will make it a habit to do all the research I can before asking here. That is only polite.
