DHCP/DNS Question

Out of curiosity, what is it about the workstation environment (gnome) that breaks DNS? I read that it breaks DNS in the wiki, so I know not to install it, but there are apps that need that environment that I would love to be able to use. 95% of the time, I can do things from the CLI, but on occasion, I run into things where you need the GUI installed to even run a CLI command (converting ISO to MKV, for example). I know this is an advanced question, but is there a way to correct the problem post desktop install?
