DHCP

Hello,

I very new to Amahi and I've just successfully installed Amahi 8 on fedora 21 server. My question is this:
I don't intend to keep the server running 24x7. I will only turn it on when I need to.
In this case, what should I do about DHCP? Should I turn DHCP off on my router and manually assign IPs to all of my (and my family's) devices? If I do this, what happens if a guest comes over and needs to use my wifi connection?

Thanks!
Srijan

Please see the Amahi FAQ.

For part time servers, you would need to leave the DHCP enabled on the router and disable it on the HDA.

The HDA as a part time server wiki article might help as well.

Thank you, but wouldn't this mean that I won't be able to use any of the amahi apps?
I really need to use amahi anywhere with the iOS app. Is there any way to do this without turning off DHCP on my router?
If not, can I somehow setup a VPN on amahi so that I can access my files over the internet?

Did you read the FAQ?

Amahi is not designed to be a part time server.

You should be able to access the apps by long name (i.e. app.domain.com) in your network, just not short name. Also accessing files inside the network may require IP address vs \\HDA.

Not sure the DHCP will affect use of Amahi Anywhere. Never tried it, so you might need to check that functionality.
