[SOLVED] Intranet and internet speed discrepancies

Postby vurstp » Tue May 28, 2013 3:22 pm

Hello all,

I am concerned about two issues that I have. I'm having issues with my network setup which is my most urgent issue and I'm also having some issues with the amahi OS drive. I know this section is for networking, but I'm not certain as to whether or not the two are comorbid.

1.Issues with my network setup.

My setup and problem are as follows:
My amahi server is acting as my router. All my machines are connected wireless to my airport extreme, except the amahi server which is wired. On my iMac and my iPad, internet is lightning fast and so is file transfer to and from the server. However, on my macbook and macbook pro, as well as a friends PC laptop, both internet and intranet speeds are painfully sluggish. Some websites do no even open, and transfering files to and from the server is extremely slow.

Only just today, the internal and external speeds on my laptops started to act strange (ie slow.)

Originally, the amahi server was not acting as a router. To try and resolve the issue, I decided to alter that and so configured my router according to the airport extreme router guide found in the installation guide on the main website. Once it was properly configured, upload and download speeds on the server sky rocketed, connection speeds both internal and external were maintained on my desktop and tablet but it did not resolve the issue with the laptops.

2. I've been getting errors from the drive that ubuntu and amahi are installed on, but not my media drive which houses the shares.
Here is the errors I get from the drive.:

Again, I'm not sure the two are related, but any advice on the drive would be most helpful as well.

Switched out main drive. Fresh install ubuntu server + amahi. Errors have vanished.

Glad to hear :)

(that was a lot of information to absorb and try to diagnose!)

Now, your Amahi HDA is NOT a router. If you set it up as a gateway, the surprising thing is if it will work at all!
So, it's not clear what you are doing.

Also, the [wiki]Airport express[/wiki] is notoriously hard to set up on other than the recommended configuration by Apps (on purpose by Apple to help the user).
My HDA: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz on MSI board, 8GB RAM, 1TBx2+3TBx1

Aye it was a lot to scroll through. Perhaps it would have been better to create two threads for these two problems - better yet, save the meat and potatoes of the problem until someone asked for more.

Currently, the HDA is routing on behalf of my Airport Extreme. You're right, Apples hardware is a bitch to configure for this type of thing. The workaround is reserving one address for your HDA and another bogus address in DCHP reservations (albeit I didn't have to do this, I have an Airport Express Repeating the Network that I assigned as the second reservation), then narrow the DCHP range in the Airport Extreme down such that the only address allowed are the two in the DCHP reserve list.

So atm, my airport extreme routes only to the HDA and airport express - while the HDA is handling the routing for all my devices.
