Network & Internet Connection Unreliable

I set up a new Amahi box today, and I followed all the instructions. Everything works great! BUT, the whole network is now slightly slower (not a huge issue), and the net cuts in and out - I have to refresh a page a couple times to get it to load correctly sometimes, and others pages won't load all the way. Also, the HDA interface (http://hda/ or the machine's IP) is extremely slow. I've tried changing the DNS on my Amahi system from OpenDNS to my ISP's DNS (Charter), which did nothing. The computer has a single core processor running at around 2.4GHz and 2GBs of RAM - so I meet the system requirements. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

You may have DNS conflicts with machines. Any machine with a Static IP setup would need to have DNS pointing to amahi server and DHCP machines and network attached devices may need to be rebooted to get a new DHCP lease from amahi. If you didn't turn off your router's DHCP or another DHCP server on your network then you could be getting conflicting results for IP and DNS. That's a good place to start. Depending on the DHCP lease time it may just take a while for devices to release their IP and get a new one from your amahi server.

If the clients are Windows-based, you can do this from the command prompt:

Code: Select all

ipconfig/release ipconfig/renew
Reboot is not required.

hemminger: Yes I have disabled the DHCP server on my router and I have changed the DNS to the IP address of the Amahi machine.
bigfoot: I had rebooted all the machines on my network anyway and it didn't seem to make a difference.

Is the primary and secondary DNS pointed to the HDA? Also, did you program static on the HDA or the clients? Its best to do it on the HDA in my experience.

Yes, both the primary and secondary DNS addresses point to the Amahi server. And what do you mean? Yes the HDA has a static IP address on my network. Another thing - I've forwarded the port to get the VPN to go through but your website keeps telling me it's not enabled (I haven't had the chance to test it myself). I doubt it has anything to do with the issue at hand, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Oh and one of my desktops (Windows 7) is no longer able to connect to the network (I get the "Limited Connection" error).

There are multiple ways to do static IPs with Windows clients. You can do it via the HDA dashbaord, or directly on the client by setting the properties in networking.

Have you tried the networking troubleshooter?

http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Network_troubleshooting

Maybe it will point us to what might be going on. Also, as another step consider shutting down everything and restarting. Start with the modem, then router, then the HDA. Once all seems to be working, then try the client. I have seen this work before to correct networking problems.
