First, would like to thank you for all the helpful discussions on this forum, they have helped me figure out quite a few glitches in my set up. Unfortunately, can't quite understand this one.
I have Amahi set up on an HP Proliant Microserver. Router is a DLink DIR-655. My desktops and laptops are all Windows, some XP Pro, some Vista. Home workgroup/network is set to "home". I can access shares without difficulties, and I have no problem accessing shares and the server via VPN from work (though this all took some troubleshooting with the help of these boards).

However, I found that I needed to keep the router DHCP system on in order for network computers to access the internet in the case that the server was off. Put another way, all computers on the network were unable to access the internet when the amahi server was powered down. To solve this, I turned off the DCHP server on the amahi machine (successfully), and let the router handle it.

Here's my question(s):
1. I get an error when I try and access the HDA by typing "home". I can access with the IP fine. I have left the DNS server on. This is the error I get:

"You were looking for "home" but that domain is not on this server.
Apache/2.2.9 (Fedora) Server at plus.vern.com Port 80"

2. What potential problems will this cause me, if any?

Apologies if these are noobish questions, and fairly basic, but thanks in advance for any clarification and help.

Why not just leave your hda on (and handling DHCP and DNS)?

This is the expected way to use the hda.

When your router manages DHCP, the hda doesn't know what IP addresses are used for each host on your network so it can't handle DNS properly.

I think I may have hit on a solution (though perhaps not the easiest or most desirable). I specified the DNS server of the host computers to look for the amahi server first, then an outside DNS server second, rather than leave it on automatic.

I now get the appropriate access to the server when I type "home" or "hda". I'll test this and see if it works consistently if I turn the router DHCP off.

You need to set up the DHCP and DNS on your router/firewall correctly.
If your box states its a statefull firewall, get somthing better.

I would not connect the HDA dirctly to the net.

I have a firewall/DNS/DHCP to shield me off and it works fine.
The functionallity is far abouve the rudamently funtions on the Amahi. You could upgrade it to full funtionallity easilly (if yuo are a professional)
Amahi is aggresssivly trying to grab the DNS and DHCP funktion if I reboot. And you need to have a look from time to time where you are.
