Problem with host names
Problem with host names
Hi all. I'm confused because the way Amahi is supposed to work I should be able to type in host names like "hda" or "phpmyadmin" and it should take me to the Amahi dashboard or the PHPMyAdmin login screen, respectively. This doesn't work on my system. Anyone know what might be wrong? I'm afraid it might be because I run a separate web server, but I'm not sure that would have any effect. Anybody here have any ideas?
Re: Problem with host names
We need more information than you have given us.
What is your network configuration?
Have you turned off DHCP in your router?
Have you tried the Network Troubleshooter (http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Network_troubleshooting)?
What have you tried?

Re: Problem with host names
I know. I just wanted to get started. I am not a linux noob, but if there's something that always trips me up, it's networking. Hence my lack of detail -- I just don't know what helpful info would be -- I apologize for this, I don't even know where to begin. We need more information than you have given us.
See, I don't even know how to answer that... My HDA is at 192.168.1.10. I am able to get to the dashboard by using the IP address, but typing "hda" seems to work, but certain elements don't... like when I click on an app in the app list, nothing happens. Certain graphics also don't show up. But using the IP is fully functional. In addition, just typing in "phpmyadmin" does nothing. I get an "Oops! Google Chrome could not find phpmyadmin" error. What is your network configuration?
Yes, it's off. Just confirmed.Have you turned off DHCP in your router?
Yes, no problems identified.Have you tried the Network Troubleshooter (http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Network_troubleshooting)?
Not much because I don't know what settings to change. What have you tried?
Re: Problem with host names
Anyone? If I can't resolve this, it means I can't use any apps. Going to http://phpmyadmin returns an error, as does http://192.168.1.x/phpmyadmin or http://localhost/phpmyadmin.
Re: Problem with host names
Hi.
Is your DNS server correct?
Amahi should be the DNS server.

Re: Problem with host names
Ensure the Amahi DNS server is running. Also, you can do http://phpmyadmin.yourdomain.com changing yourdomain.com to match your system.
If that does not work, ensure you have released/renewed DHCP lease on your clients. Keep in mind the short URL only works if Amahi is the ONLY DNS server you are using. It has to be the primary and alternate, otherwise you will not get consistent results.

Re: Problem with host names
OK, that actually appears to work. I thought I'd tried this before and it didn't work, but before posting this reply I thought I might as well try it again and this works! Also, you can do http://phpmyadmin.yourdomain.com changing yourdomain.com to match your system.
Ah, this may be the root of the problem, because I use OpenDNS, which is too valuable to me/my family for me to give up. So I guess I'll live with using the long-form URLs... which is no big deal, really.Ensure the Amahi DNS server is running. Thanks for helping to clarifying what was at the heart of the issue!
Re: Problem with host names
Amahi uses OpenDNS, so you should be able to integrate your current settings with Amahi. See the wiki for guidance:
http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Configuring_OpenDNS
Using it via Amahi will give you the short URLs plus the OpenDNS settings that you want.

Re: Problem with host names
OK, so I decided to play with the DNS stuff a bit today...
In the Amahi control panel, I confirmed my DNS server is running.
I then switched my DNS servers on my router to both say 192.168.1.10 (the address of my HDA), and applied the new settings.
For good measure, I restarted the DNS server on the HDA.
I then tried to browse to Google.com and got an error that DNS lookup failed.
What gives?

Re: Problem with host names
Well, the standard configuration is to turn DNS off in your router, not redirect it.
With DNS turned on in Amahi, you shouldn't need it running in your router too (in fact that can lead to conflicts).
Make sure all of the systems on your network have their DNS entries pointing to the hda IP address.
Let us know how it works for you.
