Weird DNS problem

Postby acemilo » Fri Mar 18, 2011 7:46 am

Over the last couple of days I've noticed a major problem with my amahi server, it drops my internet connection. About every twelve hours, any devices on my network can't connect to the internet anymore. The only solution seems to be rebooting my amahi server which fixes it every time. This is a new problem since my amahi box is up and I usually don't restart it for months at a time with no problems. I have an image I can restore if necessary, but does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Thanks.

That sounds like an ISP problem.

I assure you it isn't an isp problem. If I turn off the amahi server and have my linksys router take over dhcp control it works fine. I just did a restore of my OS drive, we'll see if that works.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the problem is the router. I had to switch from ahami back to Ubuntu server (but I'm still going to be doing testing). My network would do the same thing. I guess the routers can't take it or something. I looked up some specs for my router because I wanted to put DD-WRT on it. I found out that it only had a mere 2MB of RAM, which is ridiculous because RAM is cheap now and this router wasn't.
(Sorry for that little rant)

Anyways, also check your routers firewall logs. I disabled the WAN Ping block on my router and one day there were two Denial-of-Service Attacks on my router.

i saw another post about this earlier, check your settings on your router. particularly the DHCP lease. i'll bet it's 12 hrs. . . i should post a link, but i can't find it, his settings had the lease at 60mins. and internet would drop every hour on the hour.

I'm not sure if my problem is related, but it sounds similar so I thought I'd share here. I recently setup a new Amahi server. The install was slick and I've been impressed with everything. However, I have a problem with the DNS server. About 24hrs in to booting up my Amahi box it stops serving DNS requests properly. It resolves local IPs, but not IPs on the Internet. The HDA reports that the DNS server is up and restarting it in the control panel does not help. Instead all web requests from any of my machines come back with a DNS error - so no webpages load.

If I go on to any of the client boxes and manually change the DNS server to something like the OpenDNS numbers, everything works again. Or, if I reboot the whole Amahi server, everything works again.

I've noticed that my Amahi server servers out IP numbers, but only gives the clients itself as the DNS. Perhaps until I solve my actual problem, could I change the DHCP service to provide the Amahi box as the primary DNS, but also serve out some backup DNS servers like OpenDNS or my ISPs DNS numbers? At least that would keep me going on all my clients until I've fixed this. Where would I change the DHCP settings?

Any thoughts? Thanks.

I know this is a really old post, but I am having the exact same problem. I've tried different modems, different routers and it all points back to something with DNS on Amahi. Anyone else ever see this or have a solution to it?

Are you using the HDA as the single DHCP and DNS server? Check the client to see if it's using the HDA for both.

Sorry, I'm not sure what client you mean.

Any machine that is connected to your network and receives its IP and DNS address from the HDA.

Let me rephrase my initial question. Did you turn off the DHCP and DNS server on your router?
