Network / Latency related Problem

Hi

I am writing to this forum, because i am running an amahi server, mainly for file sharing, but i have the following issue with the server, that i hope you can help me with.

Short info about server network spec:

The Amahi server is running on a Gbit lan connection directly to a netgear cable router, the router is acting as DHCP/DNS server right now, but i have also been running with theese servers located on amahi, and its the same.
My internet connection is a 25 mbit dl / 3 mbit ul connection on cable.

The ussue is, that when the amahi server is turned on the network is lagging, ping time in games are skyhigh (around 5-600), and videos are slow, and the same with download speed.

When i run the speedtest.net test, its showing that my connection is around 1.5 mbit dl / 0.2-0.5 mbit ul.

When the amahi server is shut down, videos are running perfect, ping time is in the low 20's when gaming, and speedtest is showing the right speed even a little more (26.2 mbit dl / 3.2 mbit ul)

Does anyone have an idea, about what is causing this slowdown on the internet speed ??

probably the fact that Amahi is using openDNS by default. I use the DNS servers of my provider, this sped everything up. There is a script for that (I think it's called hda-change-dns or something along that line).

hi

i tried your tip. and changed the dns servers that amahi uses, and it has not helped, the issue is still the same as long as the amahi server is turned on.

any other suggestions ?

I'm focused on the ping times. Slow ping isn't caused by DNS.

Q: If you simply unplug Amahi does the problem go away? If so, I'd suspect the NIC is bad on the server or the port in the router/switch that it is uplinked into. This could be causing a lot of extra traffic or bad frames.

I am having this exact same problem. I'm assuming you were able to resolve your issues as this is a very old post.

If I physically disconnect the HDA from my network or shut it down everything goes right back up (no extreme latency etc.)

1. Only recently switched back to using my router for DHCP as I didn't want to need to have my HDA running at all times. Prior to switching this there was no latency and download/upload speeds were what they should be.
2. If I also switch DNS services off on the HDA then everything is fine again except now I have no external connection on the HDA, only intranet (DNS for external doesn't resolve).

Frustrating especially as I'm sure it's something obvious (and to do with DNS on the HDA).

And yes, while DNS isn't the cause of a slow ping, the problem nevertheless goes away when DNS is turned off on the HDA.

By any chance is the default gateway on your PC set to the Amahi server?

Sorry for the late reply - didn't get notified.

No, the gateway is not set to the Amahi server but to the router.

Very frustrating!!

Thanks,
