OK, I hope this is a simple one....

I want to connect to my hda using my *.yourhda.com address but I can't ping it from a remote location (using DNS or IP address). Is there any more I have to do other than forward ports 80 & 443 on my router? I can VPN to it fine and also the IP address is resolved correctly. My router is pretty old (Netgear DG632) and not the best anyway. I have a setting for RIP direction on it and I am unsure whether it needs to be enabled at all. Not much else I can change on it though.

I have subsonic running on this server and it resolves the *.subsonic.org address fine (to port 4040)

The DNS server is running fine in the HDA setup. Any hints would be great. I ideally want to access apps like gallery3 and videos5 if possible but will settle for the HDA dsshboard for now.

Interesting. All I did was forward my HDA IP address to port 80 and 443 on my router and all was working fine. Actually I believe I use virtual server, private port is 80 and I choose a different port for public. Then when I do username.yourhda.com:port I get to the dashboard.

You can use Adito by making the private port 4443 and public port 443. Now I can access files on the server via clientless VPN via https://username.yourhda.com.

Sounds like you have already done this, so if you cannot access your stuff then I would think maybe there is a firewall issue potentially that it stopping traffic.

I'm most likely a lot thicker , but if you want to check your (.yourhda.com) address from another location, to avoid problems with firewall and/or 'clever' networks, maybe this is something for you:

I get a lot of packet loss there, also while checking other sites, but not all. Don't know why, probably something to do with the response speed.

Thanks for the replies. I managed to get it working by fiddling with the RIP Direction settings. They were set to off and I reverted it to default RIP-1 and it started working. Here is what the router has to say about it;

RIP Direction: RIP (Routing Information Protocol, RFC1058 and RFC1389) allows a Modem to exchange routing information with other Gateways. The RIP Direction selection controls how the Modem sends and receives RIP packets. Both is the default.

* When set to Both or Out Only, the Modem will broadcast its routing table periodically.
* When set to Both or In Only, it will incorporate the RIP information that it receives.
* When set to None, it will not send any RIP packets and will ignore any RIP packets received.

So I'm guessing that my router wasn't sending any info to the HDA which acts as the gateway? Anyway it works not so thanks.

Now for an easy way to access apps from external locations...... any hints

Glad you got it resolved. Maybe we need to add a new topic for router configs. There are many different ones and configuring them can be a pain sometimes.

As for accessing apps outside your network, there are 2 options.

A. For Windows clients use HDACONNECT (http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/VPNWindows)
B. See here http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Hosting_a_website on ow to configure an app to be accessible regardless of client OS.
