Network printing from a Linux client.

Postby toothandnail » Thu Mar 18, 2010 11:13 am

I've recently installed Amahi. Install was fine (once I'd managed to find hardware that Fedora would install to).

I've got Amahi providing DHCP and DNS for my network. I've also attached a printer to the Amahi box using USB - a Brother HL-5050 laser. I've been able to print a test page, and I've also been able to print from my laptop with it running Vista.

However, most of my systems are Linux, and so far, I'm not doing very well in that regard.

With the laptop running Vector Linux 6.0, I've been able to configure Cups for the printer. Attempting to send either a print job or a test page, the error I get from cups on the laptop is as below:

Code: Select all

"recoverable: Network host 'HDA' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds..." Description: Brother Laser Location: \\HDA\HL-5050-series Printer Driver: Brother HL-5050 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.4 Printer State: processing, accepting jobs, published. Device URI: http://HDA/HL-5050-series
I suspect that I'm not logged in correctly to access the printer, but I'm at a loss as to how I should go about getting the access I need.

A search hasn't shown anything useful, so I'm hoping someone here may have some suggestions.

Paul.

 Ok, cancel the question. The problem was incorrect addressing for the printer. The Cups help wasn't much (help), but after using smbtree to see how the HDA exported the printer, I've changed the address to:

Code: Select all

smb://HDA/HL-5050-series
and it now works :D
