Network stops

Postby chrisclaydon » Mon Mar 01, 2010 4:21 pm

hi have recently installed amahi with the view to remove my windows home server but have found that if the amahi server is disconected from the network the windows pc cant conect to the internet untill the amahi server is reconected to the network, this does not affect wireles conections only wired, also network transfer speed to the home server is greatly reduced while the amahi server is connected to the network,so is there somesettings that i can change to sort out this problem ,i need to run vnc srver on the amahi machine as it is headless.
any ideas would be appreceated

well, if amahi is performing DNS duties, this will happen. the fact that it does not affect wireless connections is rather strange, and may seem to indicate your networking is configured.

there is a page in the wiki for keeping DNS working when your HDA is offline. maybe it helps do what you want.
also network transfer speed to the home server is greatly reduced while the amahi server is connected to the network
this is also an indication that there is something fishy going on. check the network troubleshooting page. without more detail there is little that can be done. to get all the benefits of your HDA, you may want to turn off DHCP in your router. here are the tradeoffs of using the the HDA's DHCP and DNS server or not.

hi thanks for the reply i ran the network trouble shooter and i have posted the results bellow
Step 1: Your HDA IP address is 192.168.1.20
Step 2: Your HDA domain name is claydon.com
Step 3: Your router IP address is 192.168.1.254
Step 4: Your HDA DNS server is working fine for local hostnames.
Step 5: Your router is accessible from your HDA server.
Step 6: You can access the internet (ping test successful).
Step 7: Your HDA DNS server is working fine for external hostnames.
Step 8: Your Amahi Dashboard is accessible.
Step 9: Your HDA DNS server is used by your client computer.
Step 10: Your client computer has the correct domain name.
Step 11: Your router is accessible from your client computer.
Step 12: You can access the internet on your client computer (ping test successful).
Step 13: Your HDA DNS server is working fine for external hostnames on your client computer.

so it appears that the hda is using its own dns server not the one on the router is it possible to turn this feature off and use the one on my router and tur it back on when i am ready to use it
