You could try to set the primary DNS server in your router to the IP address of the hda. If it fails to respond, it will automatically send the request to the next server (probably one of your ISP's DNS servers).
so how it works is like this:
pc sends request for http://hda
hda is on, responds with proper IP etc. (resolves) on your pc
pc sends request for http://www.google.com
hda is on, responds (resolves) and you get google on your pc
pc sends request for http://www.google.com
hda is off, router sees that primary DNS server fails, looks for its next DNS server to resolve, gets the IP etc. and you get google on your pc
