Networking woes - quick question

Postby jimmy9pints1 » Tue Sep 28, 2010 6:44 am

Hi,
When I first installed Amahi, everything was fine.

Then just recently had a load of trouble with my HDA. Every time I switched it on the other computers on the network couldn't reach the internet. Then, the gnome network manager stopped appearing on bootup. Not sure what caused the problems, anyway, resolved those problems with some manual configuration through the command line and gnome network manager.

Now the HDA can access the internet, so can the other computers! HDA has been manually assigned a static IP of 192.168.1.11 and the DHCP on the router has been turned off again.

So far so good.

However, I cannot access my HDA "homepage" in a browser at from either my HDA itself or the other computers on the network.

Weirdly though, I can access that page at:
  • 192.168.1.11
myusername.yourhda.com (since i forward port 80 to the HDA)
Am I right in thinking this is a DNS problem?

Does anybody have any idea how to resolve it?

(extra info - I used the Amahi network troubleshooter and it failed at stage 6

Yes it is a DNS issue in my opinion. Recommend you try the Network Troubleshooter in the wiki (http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Network_troubleshooting.

This may point to what is wrong. Does your router have settings for DNS? If so, make sure they are blank or point to your HDA. I have seen issues where the router has DNS set and that will cause problems. I presume you renewed your client leases after turning off the router DHCP.

Also, check your Servers area in the Dashboard and make sure the DNS server is running on your HDA.

Hope this helps.

Its DNS if you can reach sites via IP but not by name. Make sure your firewall is letting DNS traffic through. Either configure it to let DNS traffic pass or turn the firewall off.
