DDNS problem.

Postby lostogre » Wed Apr 07, 2010 9:14 pm

I have a relatively new Amahi server (3 months old). On it, the dns server and the dhcp server are not cooperating. At first it appeared that it was just one client not being able to ping other clients by name. Then it appeared to be that all of the clients on the network can ping the hda, but not each other. Now it seems that there seems to be no consistency to it. Sometimes only certain clients can ping other clients, then none at all, but there is no pattern.

After reviewing logs during dhcp/dns activity, it appeared to be a permissions issue in the /var/named directory. I corrected and verified this against a working hda in the chat room. I have looked at the config files for both named and dhcpd and can see nothing wrong. I have watched "tail -f /var/log/messages" till my eyes hurt and I see nothing that would indicate this problem. In fact, the ddns-key is regularly approved during negotiations. One thing I have noticed is that this problem doesn't seem to affect windows clients as much as linux clients.

Any suggestions?

this tells me you messes about with the standard configuration.

the ddns setup has been one that has given us little trouble.

if your client has both wired and wireless, they both may ask for the same name if they are started nearby in time, and that will confuse the dhcp/dns server, which will simply give out another IP without giving a name per se (since it's allocated already).

we can't really do anything without detailed (timestamped) logs of some example of the bad behavior.

Honestly, I didn't do anything to the base install. It didn't work out of the box. What's odder is that it isn't doing it now. Dunno.
