CLOSED: Samba won't start

OK I tried to install VNC one last time with the same result. Except both samba server and VNC sever not running and can not start them thru dashboard.

I can access the HDA sever thru ShellinAbox. but not being an expert on fedora, don't know what command to use to view the log file

Please check the following log files for errors:

A. /var/log/amahi-app-installer.log
B. /var/log/samba/smbd.log
C. /var/log/samba/log.smbd

Share any errors here, but do not post the entire log. There is something not installing correctly that is causing the issue.

Thanks for your reply. Since I keep my files on the server I can't afford to spend much more time trying to sort this out. I re-installed Amahi 7 express. I loaded gnome manually in terminal prior to installing VNC. This procedure didn't crash samba. However VNC sever couldn't be started for some reason. I un-installed VNC and am currently rebuilding my files. about 450gig.

I like the headless feature in Amahi 7. But I also liked being able to install "Lucky Backup" and use a USB drive for my backups since LuckyBackup has a sync feature keeping duplicates of my files and where if the server fails I can just plug the drive into another computer and have access to all my files without any additional software.

There's your problem. You cannot mix the manual method with the VNC application. They are two different concepts for a desktop.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to uninstall the manual method. You may have to start over.

If you seek a desktop, your best option would be to follow the Fedora 19 USB install guidance. Although not officially supported, it has been successfully used by many.

BTW, Greyhole will provide the same capability for duplicate files. It is installed with Amahi and can provide easily for file replication.

I only installed gnome manually the 4th time I re-installed amahi 7 express because that's what was stated in WiKi.
NOTE: there is now a one-click VNC App.
If you have problems with installing this app on Amahi 7, try running this first, then install the app:
yum install @gnome

When I did this, it was the only time samba didn't break. all other installations cause samba server to fail.

Anyway thanks for your response. I will find other ways to do my backups or I will go back to amahi 6.

No problem. Sorry this is not working out easily for you.

Might I suggest you do an OS update before installing the VNC app. I installed it on my test machine with no issues. I did not install the gnome package either.

Same here, installing vnc breaks samba. I eventually got samba working again by uninstalling vnc and reinstalling samba.

Would you be willing to help sort out this issue? I have been unable to duplicate it.

If so, please check /var/log/amahi-app-installer.log for errors. Secondly, what apps were already installed when you installed VNC? Were OS updates completed?
