Should I not edit /var/named/dynamic/hda-n2a.conf ?

Postby surfrock66 » Fri Jun 07, 2013 9:33 am

My wife asked if it's possible to set up DNS c-name aliases for stuff like "http://facebook" and I know I can do that by editing this file: /var/named/dynamic/hda-n2a.conf

I've perused...looks like the consensus is "don't do that." But is it a "you shouldn't" or is it a "omg don't do it you'll break everything for real!" Because I really want to muck around (backing it up first of course)

I believe this is another one of those files that can be rewritten by Amahi. Modifying it will probably work until that point, then you will lose the changes.

Why not just use shortcuts with the browser vs typing a URL? Serves the same purpose, less typing LOL

we both work at a hospital where all our services work this way, so "http://payroll" or "http://pwa" etc. I think she likes the idea.

Sucks that it gets overwritten...I'll prolly just ignore it, though I guess it'd be possible to put some sort of comment key in, then do like a cron of a script that does a cat | grep for the comment and if it finds it exit, if not then amend or something. Seems like a pain though.

There will be better aliasing capabilities in Amahi 7. Seems like the shortcuts would be the simpler solution, but everyone has there own ways :)
