Windows workgroup

Postby Gary67 » Wed Jan 11, 2012 6:20 pm

I have a windows several windows based computers at home and an Amahi server. I have turned off DHCP on the server as it is handled by my router. I don't use a VPN.

My Windows computers are part of a workgroup with a unique name that I chose. The server is set up as the default home.com.

My windows computers can access the server but I have to go through the network tab to access my files for some reason the shortcuts don't connect properly directly.

Do I need to change the workgroup on the server and if so how?

Or am I better to just change the workgroup name on the PC's total of 9 would need doing and if so what would I use?

The command to access shares is \\hda in Windows Explorer or the Run As box. Since you are not using the HDA as your DHCP server, expect some problems with Amahi functionality.

I would recommend you allow the HDA to be your DHCP server unless there is some reason the router has to do it. It makes things work so much smoother.

BTW, you can map network drives to your shares as well in Windows. That makes it even easier to access files.

I think I fixed the links problem.

The reason I don't want to use DHCP on the server is because it is not on 24/7. At the moment it is only a file and backup server fro a part time business based at my home and not on at weekends or overnight. If that changes I will of course change it then.
