More Fedora 11 progress, kickstart working again

Postby cpg » Sun Nov 08, 2009 4:58 am

Hi, another quick update on the Fedora 11 test release:

- massive amount of fixes, some new (small) features and cleanups
- the new installer defaults to auto configuration of the network. this should improve the networking configuration issues across the board
- when using the kickstart method of installation (much faster and leaner, ideal for a headless install) should NOT not "hang" any more in the end in the post scripts
- the installer has only one place now where it assumes the mysql user and password. this bring us much closer to making that part customizable

In other news, some translations are complete (not not transferred yet to the released platform): spanish, indonesian, french, dutch, and chinese ... plus new: portuguese coming up!

note - if you use kickstart to test, you have to create one user in a console window, as root login is not allowed in GDM. do this:

Code: Select all

ctrl-alt-f2 (to go to the console) login as root (password is hda) useradd -c 'My User Name' -g users myusername passwd myusername
then login as that username in the graphical environment. you may need to install firefox (yum -y install firefox) or other programs, as it's a fairly thin install.

here's a project for someone interested - optimize the packages for a headless install :)

For a headless install, all you need is the base install, nothing more.
when amahi installs, it installs the required dependencies as well no?

hehe. if it's not tested, it doesn't work :)

good suggestion, though.

All went well on my kickstart install.

Had to create a user, but that will be mainstreamed, also took a very long time and for the end user, it makes them think its hung, needs progress bar on hda-install.

Had to install firefox, minor issue, also got errors when changing themes in the dashboard, this has been submitted for debug.

Will report more later when I get into it more.

Cool. Yeah the kickstart install method does not install firefox. It still installs the desktop and gnome.

Thanks for the debug report! That's what we need, debug!

Did some more testing.

- Tried to install Sabnzbd tomorrow. It is installing but does not start. The error_log give these messages:

Code: Select all

- Tried to install Squeezecenter. Squeezecenter is not installing. The installations hangs with this message:

Code: Select all

sab: yes, it's rpm based and we did not all rpms yet to the repo (after recompiling on f11)

the other problem ... can you look at what the /var/log/amahi-app-installer.log

however, please check (and update) the Fedora 11 page. some of us have been updating it with info on what works and what doesn't on F11.

we're not looking at fixing apps yet, hence keeping feedback is great so that we can more rapidly fix them.

Did take look at the /var/log/amahi-app-installer.log

Code: Select all

It says nothing about the Sabnzbd or Squeezecenter install.

I will update the wikki. First i want to install the Fedora 11 / Amahi in a virtual machine (Virtualbox) so i can install the Fedora 10 /Amahi on my server and get rid of WHS. Yes i know i have a weak spot for Amahi and Linux ;)
