greetings all!

a lot of the activity in development in the last few days and
even weeks has taken place in the irc channel, as this new one-click
online installer needs more interactive testing.

i am happy to report that we have reached a small milestone, where
we have fairly stable support for:

- rpm apps
- rpm + webapps
- webapps with custom fields in the apache conf file
- server based apps

we selected the application sabnzbd to test things out.
tammer is a bit of an expert on this one and helped a lot in
testing - thanks tammer!

and we're happy to report that sabnzbd and the other apps
in the app gallery (http://www.amahi.org/apps/)
now work with the one-click installer!

i'd like to see more testing for this platform release:

rpm -Uvh http://alpha.amahi.org/noarch/hda-platf ... noarch.rpm

it should be backwards compatible and safe to update

also, you guys probably know we moved to ugint git, though i am not
sure we announced it here in the list (see http://blog.amahi.org)

I'm too lazy to check the git stuff, has the mt-daapd bug been fixed BTW?

A previously set up Fedora 9.5 + Amahi? Just a Fedora 9.5? What?

If this gives me more network/samba control, I am all for it.

no, there is no list of features new to the test release.

for the record we're at v52 at the moment ..., testing, testing, testing ...

we added a settings sub-tab to control global settings for samba, however, it's not ready yet.

Check out the smbldap installer message that I posted earlier. In order of perference:

Support mixed-mode netbios so that all systems don't have to be on the same subnet.

To help out above, support WINS.

Have user authentication in LDAP and use the ldap sync program.

Have LDAP use mySQL.

Support user logon scripts, particularly to mount desired shares and printers.

WinNT style PDC/BDC.

I think you will find all of this in the smbldap installer....

interesting. we made an attempt to support ldap last summer and gave up.

as i am sure you can appreciate, it would be The Right Thing to do. with ldap we would allow users to control individual things like webapp logins, vpn logins, ssh logins, samba logins, ...

i may be too thick, but i read ldap documentation and, near as i can tell, was written by martians.

it's also a bit overreaching. just a "minimal" ldap database was over 3500 records!
it wants to control not just *all* the users by also the groups (all of them) and a bunch of other things.

so it looks to me that it's hard to make this simple for the users.

all that said, it would be great if someone with experience would be interested in helping out with this.

we did leave a little bit of support in actually, so there is a base of ldap support. and i have a lot of (so far proven to be hard) questions on how to organize LDAP in a way that it's completely invisible to the end user, who does not really care about LDAP, yellow pages, pam, openvpn or whatever technology it's used to manage the guts of the system.

I have to agree with cpg on the "martians" bit.

However, I do have "Fedora Unleashed: 2008 Edition", from Sams Publishing, which contains chapter 24 "LDAP". This chapter is the entire reason I bought the book. Basically, it explains how to set up OpenLDAP so that Evolution and Mozilla Thunderbird can use a directory of names for sending email.

Some day I'll actually get to do it, but that day is a long way off. My intended use is as a house wide directory for our myriad of family and friends addresses, phone #'s etc.

Hopefully, someone with more time on their hands may make something of this info before I get to it.

there is a thread that I posted back in January, called "smbldap installer".

This script is pretty decent. It was developed on k12osn a while back and can really work...

But it has lagged for the OS and probably needs a little tweeking to use on FC9.

nemolomen's post about a house wide address book intrigued me because I've been trying to find a good solution to this problem. Multiple computers, multiple users and sometimes even multiple email clients on a variety of OSes means that a network accessible address book would be very useful. Has anyone made any progress with this? Anyone looked into using phpldapadmin?

I'm no ldap genius but I'm willing to try and to learn.
